I took my good friend Tim, the same guy who got his first elk this season to Texas last week for a little pig hunting.

On day one we spotted a nice looking boar about a mile out routing in a field. I sent Tim down wind and let him pick his way to the hog across mostley open ground. I stayed up on a ridge and watched with binos.

Tim made a beautifull stalk and closed to within 50 yards before hammering this Boar with his .30-06. He was shooting a 180gr Nosler PT. The shot went straight through the heart and exited the boar immediatley went into a death run finsihed off by a back flip as he went to hog heaven.

Tim shot at the hog once more and missed the second shot as the hog was running. But I'll tell you it was neat to watch this stalk unfold.

This is Tims third year hunting and I'd say he's coming right along.......:)

As for me I stumbled around with my .470NE and shot at a few jack rabbits on the run just for fun. If you're gonna shoot jack rabbits always use enough gun.

I jumped a hog late the last afternoon and my first shot was a dud (dead primer). When I was able to aquire him again it was nearing 200yds and I sent a hail Mary his way and skined him. At which point my dog took off after him as he was leaving a little blood. In any case 10 miles later I caught the dog and walked back to the truck in the dark sans the hog. But with a big smile on my face and spring in my step....God I love stuff!!!!

I wouldn't post a fake as I have no reason to. I hunt and hunt often.

That hog weighs about 250Lbs or so I didn't have a scale with me so that's a guess.

He looks good because I take the time to set up and frame the photo correctly. A poorly framed shot of the same hog can make it look like a rat terrier. A well framed shot makes it look like what it is, a very nice free range Texas boar hunted the right way and well hunted.:)

Wow, I was guessing at 280. How thick is the front cartlidge plate on your Texas hogs. Are the hams as small as our Cali. cousins. One that size here is sausage.

Surely, (and don't call me...never mind. Don't know why *I* would be making that joke, anyway!)

The angle (upwards), and animal in foreground all tend to make the hog look a little bigger. No deliberate exaggeration- just putting the pig where he can be well seen. H&H has a sterling reputation here, as he did at TFL.

Yeah some of them have incredible cartlidge plates. This one was pretty soft up front. I shot one the week before last that was like trying to bend over a piece of 2" plywood. And he was asmaller hog. I don't know why that is but some hogs are solid steel for the guards and otrhers not so much.

I've noticed that the really wild hogs with more euro genes tend to have smaller hams than the more domsetic looking ones.

As far as weight goes on thaat boar i didn't have scale with me so the weight is just an educated guess.

Tim carries one of two side arm his favorite is a G-20 10MM with 200gr Hornandy XTPs. His other is a Ruger Redhwak .44mag.

I carry either a G-20 or a S&W629 mountain gun in .44mag with 240gr rem soft points.

I would love to go pig huntin', but there's not wild ones here. My cousin, who lives in TN, keeps saying I have to go down there with the muzzleloader for hogs. I may have to take him up on it. A .50 cal with 300 grain SST's and 130 grains 777 should work good, no?

I haven't told too many people about this but here goes public info now..

There are wild hogs in Arizona....No I'm not talking about Javalina I'm talking full blown wild frerral hogs.

I went to school in Prescott around 15 years ago and I shot a big ole hog west of town in some draws to the west of Granite MT.

There was a fairly good poulation of them in those days but very few people knew about it.???! I kept it that way.

Also up in the the Northwest corner of your state kind where Utah Nevada and Arizona all come together there is a river called the Virgin up north of Lake Mead into Arizona and Utah there is a very healthy population of hogs in and around that river valley.

Don't say I never did anything for ya....And good luck let me know how it goes..;)

Good Lord, I had no idea! I can't believe the hunting regs don't mention that. I wonder what I'd need to hunt them? As far as I know there isn't any tags or permits needed. Just a hunting license? I'm so excited!

As far as I know hogs are non protected non game classified NV And UT which means that they would not be listed in the regs.

But check just to be sure.

Would a .357Mag be big enough for a backup, or for something that size, you really need to go .44Mag?

I wouldn't hesitate to use carry a .357 with the right loads. Like a 158gr or 180gr bullet. The main thing I use a pistol for is delivering the finisher. I happen to like .357's very much.

As usual, I agree with H&H Hunter. .357 in the heavier bullets should be fine for hog.

My wife says my youngest pup Bernie (1/2 Catahoula Kerr Hound, 1/2 Saint Bernard) has just gone over 80 pounds at one year old. He's gotten into the goofy habit of bringing her heavy stuff, like a big plastic bag of potatoes, in that oversized mouth of his. So the pig-hunting Kerr Hound half of him may need to see the field someday with dear old Dad, in search of retrievable bacon on the hoof. Thanks for the pics, H&H Hunter!
