I was shooting this gun today and got misfires intermittently with 4 different brands of ammo. I put as many as 3 firing pin strikes on some of the rounds before they would ignite! on several i had to rotate the round in the chamber to get it to ignite!

what are the potential remedies for this problem. this is a relatively new gun about 5 years old but has been shot very little.

Well, since you now apparently now have two .22 Mag rifles misfiring with the same ammo?

I'd have to say you got your ammo contaminated with oil, solvent, or moisture somehow.

I have been shooting Winchester & CCI .22 Magnum ammo for the last 40 years, and I cannot recall ever having a misfire.

If there is a more reliable Rim-Fire round, I haven't seen it yet.

The only other possibility I can think of is, the chambers are badly fouled in both rifles, and the cartridges are not seating fully when you close the bolt, or in this case, bolts. Seating them with the firing pins takes energy they can't spare and still fire the primer mix.

Clean the snot out of both rifles with a bore brush & solvent.
Also, clean the bolt faces and barrel / breech faces, including the extractor notches.

Also, see if there are dents in the barrel breach-face's where the firings pins have hit them from dry-firing.
If there are, the dents are not allowing the FP's to crush the cartridge rim against the barrel like it should.

If that doesn't help, buy some fresh ammo and try that.

well all of the 22 mag and 17 ammo is new and not contaminated. i soaked the bolt of the 783 in solvent for several hours and cocked and decocked it many times. i sprayed some break free CLP on the bolt. this seemed to help and i only got one misfire today.

Unfortunately this rifle 783 will not group at 100 yards, i suppose i shouldn't have cleaned the barrel. it groups about 1-1.5 inches at 50 yards on sand bags on a bench. it was doing much better than that before i cleaned it????

the scope mounts and rings are tight on my bushnell "bone collector" 3x9 scope. don't know why I lost the accuracy???

Now the 917 is much newer ,about 5 years old, it hasn't been shot much. i think i'll do as RCMODEL says and clean the chamber area and the bolt. it may just have never been cleaned. boy it shoots well 1/2 to 3/4 inch at 50 yds and .75 to 1.5 inch at 100yds. it has a nikon buckmaster 3x9 on it. It is my 35 year old step sons rifle and he did say he had misfires with it. I tested REm, Win, FEd and CCI ammo in the 17 today the Win was best at 100 yds it was windy so I'll try againanother calm day.
