I tried to do a search for this topic but all I get is an error message
"The search term you specified (41) is under the minimum word length (3) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer."
So... what's your favorite 41mag loads for everything from plinking to full house Holy Cow recipes?
I'll be shooting a Blackhawk 6.5" barrel. Like lead bullets for general range work and plinking.

Mor'in Sisco-
I can't offer much, but I do remember some partial
load data from Sierra's first edition manual. While
it did not directly address the use of lead bullets;
I found that this load was a very satisfactory load:
Cases were new Remington-Peters
Primers were CCI Large Pistol (standard)
Bullets were Sierra 170 grain Jacketed Hollow Cavity
Powder was Winchester-Western 630P
Charge = I can't recall
Velocity was advertised at 1300 fps*
Test weapon was a 4" barrel Smith & Wesson model 57
*Consult Sierra's 1st edition loading manual for
confirmation of this data!
This load, as a starting load proved to be very accurate.
However, the cost of a lot of 100 of the 170 grain Sierra
Jacketed Hollow Cavity bullet's; probably out weighs the
advantages of using it in the first place. I just thought I
would share my experience with the .41 magnum with
you. Long Live The .41 Magnum!
Best Wishes,

My favorite load for .41 is a tie between two loads.
No lead loads, never ran lead down any of my .41s.
Remington or starline brass.
CCi 350 magnum primers.
Hornady XTP-HP 210 grain #41000 bullets.
Either 20.6 of H110 or 17.6 of 2400.
They are both good for about 1200-1300 FPS, and are fun to shoot.
Both have excellent accuracy at 70-100 yards.
2400 is cheaper, and possibly a little less cranky, but H110 is more powerful when looking at the charts.
Both are absolute flamethrowers.
Both loads are well within SAAMI specs, last time I checked.
I have been using the 20.6 of H110 load for years.
My old favorite load I used fo many years as well, (17.6 of 2400)
Can't go wrong with either.

I only do one load for my wife's Desert Eagle .41 Magnum. It functions fine and has a good feel.
Remington Brass and Winchester Large Pistol Primers
16.6 grains of AA#9
OAL 1.585
With Hornday 210 gr XTP bullets
I tried 12.4 grains of Blue Dot but could not get reliable functioning out of the Desert Eagle and did not want to try and go higher.
Good luck.

In my 4" Smith M58........WW brass, CCI-300 primer, 215 gr lead SWC, 7.5 grains of UNIQUE= 970 fps. Very accurate in the three .41's I've owned over the years.
Not much of a jacketed bullet guy in most handguns.

Here you go.
This search page will give you a LOT to search through.

The "trick" to making the search term longer is to put an * either before or after it.
In the above, I used the following search term (without quotes) ".41*"

Ah, here you go. Text of a message on page two of the link I gave...
(This is me talking about a new load I put together...)
"Tried a new load over the weekend.
8.2 (eight point two) grains of WW 231
Winchester Large Pistol Primer
215-gr. hardcast LSWC bullet by Valiant
mixed Remington and Federal cases.
I loaded these using my Lee turret with the adjustable charge bar, with which I've not been too impressed in the past.
But, it was actually fairly consistent, and shooting across the chronograph bore that out.
IIRC the average was about 1070 fps., with not much spread, for about 547 ft. lbs of energy, but recoil was very mild.
The nice thing was that out of my 4" Model 58 they shot almost to point of aim at about 15 meters (I think that was about the distance).
I had been pushing the 215s at about 950 fps. for bowling pins, and while they were a GREAT pin load, they were dropping well below point of aim, probably a good 6", at 15 meters."

Thank you Mr. Irwin (and others!). I forgot about using the wildcard.
Should've clarified in my first post too that I have loaded for the .41 before. Had a model 57 that I sold during a momentary lapse of reason.
Can't find any of my notes for the loads I was using! The only one I vaguely remembered was 20 some grains of H110 under a 210gr Nosler HP.
I've got a New Model Blackhawk on the way to me, loaded up some lead rounds the other day using AA#9.

Lead loads: 215 gr Williams SWC, 8.2 gr Unique
Jacketed: 210 gr Sierra JHP, 18 gr Accurate #9
Both I use Remington Brass, and CCI 300 primers. The are both very accurate in my Model 58. I have a bunch of other loads, some with other bullets brands and types, but the two above have been favorites for a long while.
Other powders of good mention 2400, H110 and W296, for jacketed bullets.
Frank in MT: Have you chronographed your Unigue load? What 215 SWC are you using? I use Williams of St Maries, ID.
Caz223: Don't like flame throwers thats why both 2400 and W296 aren't my first choice of powders, don't like the flash. But W296 does do some very hot nunting loads in JHP's

Yes I have chrono'd the .41 load or I would not have listed a velocity. The 215's are the last of the 2K of copper washed cast SWC's that I bought 20 years ago. Unknown as to origin.
I am getting spooled up to cast bullets again and a good mold for the .41 is on the list. Great cartridge. Unfortunaltely it was was immediately overshadowed by larger more potent rounds. I used my last .41 Smith, a 6" M57 to take a very nice antelope back about 19 years ago. Sold that gun when I was buying some property, but recently picked up a very nice S prefix M58. So I once again I'm back in the .41 mag game again.

My reason for asking is my load I listed is hotter than yours, I don't have access to a chronograph, and seems I could work with reducing that a little bit as long as maintain the accuracy.

I was at work last night so I didn't have access to my load manuals but while checking powder makers load data on the web (I was on break, really!) It amazes me how few of them list lead bullet data for any caliber.
Accurate does, looks like #9 is a good powder to have around. Just happen to have a lb of it too. If memory serves me right I used W231 for lighter loads, always have a lb or two of it around.

7.0 of Unique and a cast swc is my favorite plinker.

Try this search (http://www.thehighroad.org/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=615095&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending): type in the search field: ".41 Magnum" (with the quotes around it), and search Titles of threads in Handloading and Reloading.

since many don't use the leading decimal point when typing calibers .41 will miss some.
41*ma* will give you 41 mag and 41 magnum.
Of course it will also give you 41 margaret and 41 mary. :neener:
