My friend inherited a barreled 1903 springfield action in 25.06. the action has not been fit to a stock yet. Barrel is stamped Choate--25-06

is there anyway to check the accuracy of this barrel before he spends a bundle on getting the stock inleted, finished, glass bedded and an adjustable trigger installed??

Does it have a scope or optics on it? If so, there should be some kinda way to fashion a machine rest type thing to shoot it for accuracy.

I used to keep an old cut-down military 98 Mauser & 03 Springfield stock around for such testing, but they are long gone now.

If you have a way to mount a scope on it?
Check with the gunsmith you PM'd me about and see if he might have a loner 03 stock he could let you use.

Or, you might be able to find a cheap take-off stock at a gunshow.

it has a one piece leupold base mounted on the action! I'll look for a take off springfield stock before we spend any serious money on htat old barreled action.

thanks again for your thoughtful suggestions RC!!

Check the serial no. on it before you spend any money on it. If it fall below ( I can't remember where they start I think around 800,000 ) but not sure on that. I don't have my reference book ( packed away ) but the low serial no's were not heat treated properly and reportedely would break like glass. Good luck. Al
