This may be in the wrong area. I put it here because most of the smart gun guys reload.
I have a T/C Contender Barrel in 10mm. Can I fire .40cal from it also? The S&W 610 allows this.
I want to make sure, not just drop a round in there and do it. The thoght of a KB scares me.

I'm not sure how the T-C holds the cartridge, but if it head spaces on the case mouth, the .40 will go in too deep. If the extractor engages the rim, then it could hold it sufficiently to take the firing pin strike. If so, it'll shoot ok, but why? You got a 10 mm barrel for a reason!

There's a guy over on Paco Kelly's lever guns forum that shoots .40 from his 10mm T/C. No guarantee as to how safe it is. He claims the .40 headspaces on the extractor.
I used to shoot some .40's from my Glock 10mm without trouble.
Travel at your own risk.

The S&W 610 allows this.The 10mm S&W revolver depends on moon-clips to headspace the shorter .40 S&W cartridges.
It won't work without clips.

I have to ask. What does "head space on the extractor mean? If I put a 40 cal in, and the breach closes up, do I have a winner.
or,
?

It means the extractor hook has a hold of the case rim, and holds it "close enough" to the breech face for the firing pin to reach it.
Then when/if it fires, the case gets a running start backward before slamming into the breech face at high velocity.
The 10mm headspaces off a shoulder in the chamber so the 10mm case is right where the primer is in contact with the breech-face. The extractor is not touching the case rim, until it needs to yank it out of the chamber and keep it on the breech-face long enough for it to hit the ejector and knock it out of the gun.
A .40 in a .40 chamber does the same.
IMO: If you want a .40 S&W auto pistol, you should probably trade your 10mm for one.
Otherwise, Fuggedaboutit!

This is a T/C Contender. Single shot pistol with interchangeable barrels. The 10mm is only one of my barrels. They never made a 40cal.

Or just get a .40 barrel.

rc, I see that. bllberry makes a few the factory didn't. mike bellm is a another source.
Let me change gears. Bullberry makes 357 max, 357 mag, and 38 special. I do believe one could fire the .38 in the 357 max with no problems.
This head space thing, how does it work in the 357 and 38 world?

Revolver cartridges have a rim that controls the headspace at the back of the chamber.
Auto pistol cartridges don't have a rim, and the headspace is controlled by the case mouth butting into a shoulder machined inside the front of the chamber.
Bottle-neck rifle calibers control headspace by the shoulder of the case contacting the shoulder in the chamber.

Match Grade Machine also sells .40 barrels. I highly recommend MGM, they'll build your barrel to order and have it at your door in just a few weeks. Bullberry may take several months.
You can safely shoot .38 spl, .357 magnum or .357 maximum in a maximum chamber. My friend has a .357 Max barrel and it shoots .38 spl OK, but not great. .357 magnum barrels shoot .38 spl much better.
