Looking at high capacity .45 ACP's and I'm considering buying either the FNP-45 4 1/2 inch barrel or an XD45 4" Service or 5" Tactical, both with thumb safeties. I haven't held or shot either, just doing a little internet research at this time. Not interested in a Glock and the XDm doesn't have a thumb safety. Anyone here own or shot either of the FNP-45 or XD45. Pros and Cons! Thanks!!

Choose what feels better in your hand, that's the only advice that I can realistically offer despite my preference for the XD over the FNP.

Between those two- and the Glock 21, I went with the FNP45. It seem to fit my hand better, was DA/SA and didn't seem to be as "top heavy" as the XD.

I have shot both, they both are great. I currently have a Tactical XD because it feels better in my hand.

Really, that's the key. For all practical purposes, both are interchangeable in their specs. What matters is which feels better to your hand.

I have no experience with the FN other than handling it

The XDM .45 is a very nice shooting .45 and accurate. Mine ate every wide cavity HP I fed it without a problem, it changed my opinion of poly frame pistols.. I'm also impressed with the machine work and finish on them.

I do like the safety option's on the FN better and that its hammer fired.

My conclusion on the two when comparing them was that both are great guns, folks like the accuracy of both, I got the idea that the FN may be more accurate from my reading but thats all up to the shooter and hard to generalize i think..and that the xdm is more likely not to have an issue with different Hp's.

The FN holds 2 more rounds per mag, gives you more choices in how the pistol is kept loaded (condition 1 or 2. any XD only gives you the option of condition 1). But I haven't fired a FNP-45. I do own a FNP-40 and a FNX-9 that I like... however, my XD45 sits on my nightstand.

My take: get whichever one you damn well like better. They're both excellent guns. If you like the way one looks better, or can get a better deal on one, or one feels better in your hand, or you feel like flipping a coin, whatever. You can't make a wrong choice here. About the only objective differences are that you can decock a FNP a not a XD, that the FNP does not have a grip safety, that the FNP comes with more mags, that the FNP holds more rounds per mag, and that the XD has a better warranty (lifetime vs. 3 year for the FN's). Oh and the XD comes with a free mag loader.

The 40 and 45 caliber XD's have a distinct recoil, due to the high bore axis. I suggest you shoot one if you get a chance. It's quite a difference from the FN and Glock pistols.

Never shot the XD but I love my FNP-45 in both standard and Tactical varieties. Very accurate and for a high-capacity .45ACP they're very comfortable too.

I don't have much to add other than to reiterate what's already been said. I've shot both and own the FN. The fit was better for me and I prefer hammer-fired guns over striker-fired.

I have large hands and went with the flat backstrap on the grip. That made the pistol much more comfortable for me. If possible, try both pistols with the different grip options.
