Just bought a SP 2022 9mm built 1/2012. Can anyone tell me what the lever above the red dot is? It is not listed in the manual. Thanks.

I don't have one, but it looks like a hammer drop safety.

1. With the chamber empty, move the lever to red.

2. Cock the hammer.

3. Move the lever up.

If it's a hammer drop safety, the hammer will drop but not hit the firing pin. If that happens, take it someplace you can shoot and repeat with a loaded chamber. If the round doesn't fire, its a hammer block safety and it's working correctly. Sometimes they don't

I will put it to the test tomorrow. Thank you.

I've never seen a 2022 with a safety?

Some of the early SP2022 models had slide safeties, which are almost worthless IMO, as they're difficult to active/deactivate. Otherwise a great gun at a great price.

I thought it was strange too. The manual doesn't have anything listed about it. I looked at the box and it said it was built 1/12 so I don't know what to think.

I've got two SP2022s, and neither has what you're asking about.
Now that I think about it, yours is the only one I've ever seen.

Did a little more research and it does seem to be a safety. Thank you everyone for all of your help.

I looked at two 2022's in 9mm last week and neither had a safety. I can't find a safety option listed at the Sig site. I can't google a safety option anywhere. Odd....

Mine don't have that either. Where are you located at prorock? I'm guessing some states my want safeties like that?

I'm in PA. I think this is what I got. http://lundestudio.com/SigProFAQ/IX/18.html

I've never seen an SP2022 with that on it.

Took it to the range today and I can confirm that it is indeed a safety. It seems I have managed to purchase an oddity. It was great to shoot though.

Based on that, you have yourself a rare item. As it is stated there, it's not a new model option and will be sold until inventory is gone.

I'd love to have on just because it's kinda rare. They knew the American market would be a sucker for anything. :D

Everything I read says these were made and sold long ago...how did you come upon a new production unit?

Is it DA/SA or DAO?

I've read a few other threads that state it's DAO....but I can see it has a normal sigpro stubby hammer.

It is certainly a DA/SA. I found it at a LGS on display. The case it came in stated it was made 1/19/2012! The numbers on the pistol and case do match. I have to say the more I find out about this Sig the more excited I get. I'm sure it's not going to be worth much down the road but it is kind of cool to pick up a rare gun by chance.

I've been looking at SPs in 40 and 9mm for about a month looking to find a 40. (so far all I've found are 9's in stock) At least now I know if I should happen across a 9 with that safety go ahead and pick it up.

IMHO it's a pretty cool find. :p

If I recall correctly Sig made up a batch of 2022s for the French Police. They had a requirement of a manual safety. Yours is probably an over run of that order.

A few were made for law enforcement that had safeties. they are not very common
