If you were going to shoot targets in the next zip code, what 338 would you get? I like the Barrett 98B and the Accuracy International AWSM. So expensive though.

The savage mentioned above is surely a great piece and a great option. When I do it, it will be the REM 700, since I have a 5r in 308 and 223. You can find them just barely used with a few rounds down the tube for 1300 ish of you are patient.

You cant mention 338 Lapua without the Sako TRG 42. It's one of the best factory platforms going. Since purchasing mine 6 years ago the prices have come down a bit.

i think you'd be happy with everything mentioned so far in this thread.

i'd personally have one custom built instead of getting factory guns (even though the factory guns shoot very well)

on the lower end, remington also has an extremely reasonably priced 338lm

If u can afford to shoot the lapua much, have a custom rifle built. That being said the AI and TRG are nice optione.

I'd suggest the Savage 110 BA. Shot mine for the first time last weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the lack of recoil and the shockwave the muzzle break put's out. Nice having the firing line all turning to look at you and say "What the Heck was that?"

Although, don't know if it was just a problem with mine but was having some issues with feeding and extraction of Hornady brass. Got a box of Lapua and Prvi Partisan en route to test to see if it's an ammo or a gun problem though.

I've spent some time behind a 98b. Not very impressive.

I was considering a .338 Lapua also but after researching the options I am going with .338 edge instead of the Lapua. You will get similar ballistics with cheaper brass and it can be built on any standard magnum action.

Orkan- I think its hilarious that you're kid (I'm assuming its your kid) is behind you in that pic... while you're prone shooting one mean looking rifle!

Priceless.

Savage make the 111 long range hunter in .338lap and can be had for under $1500. Seems like a good option

Priceless. She loves to come shooting with me. Gets mad if I leave her in the house. I can shoot for an hour, and she won't make a peep except to cheer when I shoot. It's great for moral! :D

I'd opt for a Rem. in 338RUM all kinds of goodies you can get for them and cheaper brass. Goodies like Jewel triggers, 20" angle bases,muzzlebreaks,bi-pods, you name it it's made for a Rem. rifle. Al

What is wrong with them?

What is wrong with them?
The build quality mainly. For the money they ask for it I would expect a much more polished product. I don't like "cheap" feeling firearms, and the 98b didn't impress me in the least. It's long, heavy and offers almost zero advancement from a more proven design like the AIAW.

Accuracy was on par, but actually trying to put some work in on a steel range with one was not what I'd call fun. It's kind of hard to explain, but it seems like everything I did with it was "forced." The ergo's of the bolt, mag, etc just did not fit me in the slightest. It seems very much an attempt to have an offering in that segment to pick up money they may be leaving on the table otherwise.

I've got a quite a bit of time behind TRG's, and AI's and I'd take either over the 98b. Obviously the bullpup system of the DTA is where I put my money. All the benefits and none of the negatives.

I'd vote for the Savage 111 LRH, followed by the 110 BA.

LRH is more conventional-looking, has a huge box mag, nice muzzle brake, accu-stock, and the karsten cheekpiece. I think they go for around $1000.

On my dream budget I would go Sako, on my real budget I would get the Savage and never look back, they really are FANTASTIC rifles for the money. I would not be supprised if the Savage was every bit as accurate as any Sako, but the fit and finnish is bound to be better on the Finnish rifle

Guess I find it funny when people recommend firearms that they do not own or even fired.

I'm a huge Savage fan, but those 338LM mags are Fugly IMO.

I went with a TRG-42...but if I were doing it all over, I would opt for the DTA since you can swap barrels very quickly and have to buy just one optic.

Guess I find it funny when people recommend firearms that they do not own or even fired. I hear ya. I find it troubling that someone would stake their reputation on a recommendation for something they haven't spent any real time with.

I bought an AI AW with the switch barrel/bolt kit i.e .338 LM and .300 WM. I then decided that I wanted a dedicated .338 LM and .300 WM so bought another AI AW chambered in .300 WM. Now I have a spare .300 WM barrel and bolt. :D

The Accuracy International would satisfy me, but first I need to master my .308's and 6.5G at ranges past 800yds. Hopefully this year is a mild summer with no winds.

Sorry if I'm judging here, but if you want to shoot .338 Lapua, the cost of the rifle shouldn't really matter.

Ive seen 338 go for much cheaper than that at my local Cabelas. It's not a cheap round by any means but you don't have to spend 6 dollars a shot.

Friend of mine just got a Savage LRH. Haven't gotten a chance to shoot with him since he bought it, but I think it will be a gas to light one off. He spent $60 on his first box of ammo - I'm gonna try to get him to start reloading now. :D

Personally, I'm gonna work on making sure I can hit at extended ranges with what I've got just a bit more consistently before I worry about getting a 1000yd+ rifle.

Guess I find it funny when people recommend firearms that they do not own or even fired.

Even if some posters in this thread don't have experience with the rifles they mention the OP's question was "which would you buy" not which would you recommend, or which is best and why, or given your experience which would you buy.

I totally agree however that if the OP is seeking recommendation on which to buy it make much more sense to listen to opinions of those that have used the various options.

The wife wants to get me an anniversy gift and asked me what I might like. I said "Savage .338 Lapua" and told her where to get it. 1 month left to see if she's full of sht or not.. :o) (she's awesome regardless) However gents, I'm getting one either way, so my question is, what glass should I put on top of it?
