Back in 2010 I glommed a Yugo 24/47 Mauser that had a cheap Bushnell "Sportview" scope and a .308 heavy barrel. I got busy and never got around to shooting it until today.

The scope mounting is messed up somehow...with the reticle adjusted all the way down, the rifle still shoots about 18" high @ 50 yards. It may be an illusion, but the scope appears to be lower in front than back...almost like the rear ring is higher than the front.

At any rate, the rifle appears to shoot fairly well, given the limitations of the scope, etc.

I fired three 150 grain Federal Powr-shoks (the three on the right), then adjusted the rear screws of the base and fired one more Powr-shok. Then 5 Federal GMM matches that all landed in the single square. Bear in mind that I was shooting at 50 yards and at an orange target spot that was about 18" below the point of impact, with the scope adjusted as low as it would go.

I plan on getting a better scope and a new set of rings. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Check it for lvl that dosent look right to me. Id maybe see about replacing the base or atleast making sure its the right base for the gun.

In the bottom picture, the rear top half of the ring looks like it`s not closed..Some body might have been shooting it at a very long distance and put a shim under the rear end of the scope.

I second that! May also have shimmed it to clear the action...looks tight!

Bingo, all of you guys!

I finally removed the rings from the scope and found a weird piece of plastic used as a shim in the rear ring

I removed it and replaced the scope, but found that the bolt would no longer clear the scope ("missed it by THAT much").

Gave up and used a set of medium height rings that I had laying around.

Still not sure whether the previous owner used the shim to give extra elevation to the scope or to simply clear the bolt handle. It is a little higher than I care for...but what's a fella to do?

Try the same trick, but double it -- put a shim in each ring, which will make the scope a tad higher, so the bolt handle will clear, but the scope itself will be level.

Good idea, Vern.

But do they make regular scope shims? That ratty piece of plastic is pretty low-rent.

Personally, I use electrician's tape. It's thinner, so you can closely control thickness by building up layers, and it's sticky so it stays where you put it.

The barrel is 1.2" at the chamber and .810" at the muzzle and measures 26".

Does that really sound like a sporter to you?

I like pop can slices for shims, Ive also used electrical tape as has been suggested.
