I'm currently looking at this model: $699.99 (at Midway)

Vortex Viper PST Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 4-16x 50mm Side Focus 1/10 MIL Adjustments Illuminated EBR-1 MRAD Reticle

Anyone have any experiences with these rifles? I'm trying to find a balance between price tag and performance and I've seen a general pickup in people speaking highly of this brand.

Application:

Target Shooting (100-800 yards) on a custom AR-10 platform.

If you think this is a good scope - do you know of a place cheaper than Midway?

I have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x on a Savage of mine and am very happy with it. Clear glass, returns to zero, all the things we like to see in our optics. Nice warranty and customer service to boot. The lens cap on my scope cracked on the frame and I contacted Vortex about it. The 2-day'd a replacement and included a nice camo long-sleeve shirt.

I was also looking at the model you have as well because its a bit cheaper on the wallet.

Do you know if Vortex offers replacement turrets with markings? I know other brands do.

What would you say the key difference is between your model and the one I am looking at to justify the $250 additional?

Well apparently they do!

To be honest, I'm not sure I haven't looked at the PST variety to see what it offers. And I actually got mine back when Midway was selling the Target Dot version for $259.99! So the price difference there is actually much larger

And yes, it looks like you found their custom turrets.

They sent me turret caps for free and included a hat. I will buy more of their products for sure.

I'm running a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 mil/mil FFP (first focal plane) optic on my Savage 10 FCP HS-Precision. I love it. It replaced a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 mil/mil FFP and I don't regret spending the money to do do. The turrets are better and the glass is much better, IMO. I'm giving serious consideration to getting another Viper PST for my FNAR.

If you haven't given any consideration to the FFP model, please do so. Yes, it costs more, but it is worth it. I really enjoy having the reticle change in size as the power is adjusted on the scope. After using the FFP optic now for a year, I wonder how the heck I ever got along without it. LOL!!! :D I like the zero stop on the elevation turret.

I've got a regular viper. good glass and good people. vortex is a solid company. They're sister companies with eagle optics, which has made a pretty good name for it in the binocular world.

Vortex is gtg, I run a razor on my match rifle, and a 1-4 pst on my .22 trainer. There both solid scopes. Vortex also has good people behind the scenes to take care of any problems if them come up.

Im thinking of pairing it with this Wilson Combat mount, something a bit different than you say around.

Anyone ever used one?

Seen the lens come out of the scope itself on that identical model under .308 recoil, its not on my short list.

My impressions werent positive.

I have one and was planning on another but I seem to have a short eye relief on shooting mine so I am in doubt if I would get another.

Hmm - can anyone else say how their eye relief was? Thats another deciding factor for me.

The sweet spot gets small at full magnification, but all scopes do that to an extent. The PST and razor models are a lot of scope for the money. I know a few guys locally that are moving from Nightforce scopes to the Vortex Razor models after comparing cost and performance.

I have a 6.5-20X50PA on my Grendel and plan on adding more Vortex scopes to my rifles.

I'm a Leupold only guy and what I'm hearing about those Vortex is nothing but good things. They are matching everything Leupold is doing with regard to quality and service. My Son was was guiding some clients recently and his buddy that works with him had a pair of Vortex glasses that my Son said were every bit as clean as the Leupold's.

The one thing I really dislike about most cheaper (<$1000) scopes is how critical the eye relief becomes as you increase the magnification. My Leupold 6.5-20 and Swarovski 4-12 aren't as bad in that category. It's very important to me when I'm shooting prairie dogs moving the rifle around a lot with the scope cranked up.....It's a deal breaker for me too.....

On the other hand quality glass at a decent price is hard to come by....it seems that a lot of folks have high praise for the Vortex.

My impressions werent positiveSounds like a defective scope...even Leupolds have a bad one in a bunch. I'm sure Vortex replaced it no questions asked. Not a true reason to discount them IMO

I have the Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP, For the money I have been very pleased with the performance. I have 480 rounds fired since Mounting on my POF-308. The only possible quality issue has been 3-4 small black paint specs floating around inside since about 300 rounds. I have been to busy shooting it to call Vortex, it was not enough to cause a "stop shooting it" issue for me. Scope is solid, holds zero well and I love the FFP. It is spot on for ranging. I took it to an F-Class match and shot 356 5X my first time out at 1000 yds. I have the Vortex SPARC on my P-415 in the foreground. It is also a great red dot for the money. I am seriously considering their spotting scope next.

Vortex Viper PST is a great scope for the money. The leader in that price range in my opinion. It has almost everything you would want in an optic.

Good glass
Great FFP illuminated reticle
Zero stop
Side parallax
Good turrets with a lot of internal adjustment
Outstanding warranty (some say best in the business)

I buy my optics through Liberty Optics. Scott is THE guy to go to. Great prices and outstanding service. Tell him Orkan sent you. :)

Not sure if this applies, but, I have the Viper PST 1-4x24 I paid 499.00 a year ago. It's a fantastic scope. It's mounted on my 5.56 20" barrel. The eye relief is fantastic, it zeroed easily and has held. I truly enjoy this scope. Although, I can't seen to determine where it's made. Anybody know where they build these?

After over a year of looking around for one,I finally was able to hold and look at a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50.
It was very clear glass,on par with Sightron SIII,Nightforce, and other scopes in the $750-1500 range.I personally don't have a need for the busy EBR reticle, but others like it.
I have a few scopes with FFP,and unless you really have a use for them,a SFP scope will suite you fine.

I've been very happy with the 4 Sightron SIII 6-24x50 scopes that I have,so I doubt I'll buy a Vortex anytime soon.

I must chime in again as my vortex viper and is always on full magification and is mounted on my 7mm mag and though I didn't hit myself I feel it brushing my glasses so as I need bi-focals I maybe giving a skewed or unfair post to that extent please note this! And when I shoot my other scopes they offer to me in my glasses a better eye relief, and my earlier post is informative to eyeglass wearers not to flame the quality of the glass or the scope.... As this is the Highroad I feel I must abide by our standard.

A-Fixer.....much of us this thread was referencing the Viper PST. You indicated you were using a Viper. Not sure if you meant Viper PST or not....there is difference.

If you check the specs, you'll find the Viper PST has nearly 1" more eye relief over the Viper. While I always wear shooting glasses, I've never had an issue with my Viper PST and my glasses. If I did, I wouldn't be using it nor recommending it for consideration by others.

Been doing so much research my head hurts at the end of the night. My choices have been narrowed to the Vortex listed or a Millet LRTS. It's a stepping stone until I can get a Zeiss.

Yes it is not the PST, Just the viper took it out again today and had another shooter give his thoughts they were about the same. To those that owners of the PST enjoy.
