Son of a gun, my new 1927-A1 Deluxe is one heavy piece of equipment. Need to check on getting this thing SBR-ed and see if it helps the weight issue. Other than being heavy, it is one heck of a thumper. Met a guy at the range today and he just kept saying how sweet of a hog gun it would be. Loaded him a 30 rd stick and turned him loose with it. He never said a thing about the weight, just smiled wide and thanked me for the opportunity to shoot one. Does anyone know if SBR-ing this thing is a simple task or a monumental project?

I can't answer your specific question, but man, I came close to buying a handgun version of that a couple of weeks ago. It had a short barrel, probably 12" or so? Just ahead of the forearm, and no buttstock. It was still heavy. At least it was heavy and awkward for a handgun. I thought about SBRing it, but the handgun receiver is different so you can't mount a buttstock.

<sigh> My practical side took over, and I let "I have no use for it" rule the day.

But it was COOL.

i have the m1 version. check http://tommygunner.com/pages/services/index.htm for sbr. my understanding is that removing barrel requires some special tools and expertise.

my tommy gun does draw a fair amount of attention.

Thompsons are heavy. I have the M1 SBR vesion. I installed the 10.5" barrel myself post receipt of the tax stamp with a home-made oak barrel block, lead liners, and a padded vice. The 16" barrel was difficult to remove (red Loc-tite) and required a large pipe wrench. Although not a huge reduction in weight, the rifle now balances correctly with the 10.5" barrel and no longer feels front-heavy. Prior to replacing the barrel, I had extraction issues, which went away after the short-barrel install. Rifle is now flawless and runs perfectly.

AutoOrdnance offers factory SBR's, so they have the tools and parts to assemble one. You might want to try calling them up and seeing if they will swap out the barrel and 'manufacture' the SBR for you. That way you don't have to mark the gun with your personal info.

Will check with the company about doing the SBR work. I really want to keep the forward grip though. They should be able to tell if this is possible. All in all I may just order an SBR and keep this one for looking at.

if you really want to get some wieght off start over with a aluminum reciever.

i know what you mean they are hefty guns i would hate to have carried one of these while marching through europe.
