Anyone actually try these in a heavily choked old shotgun? How'd they work? Have an old m/f choked double I'd like to maybe use again on doves, but I prefer a I-C/mod choke for doves. Would I be better off getting the chokes opened up?

Each gun is slightly different, and while they DO open the spread, how well it patterns will still be determined by you at the pattern board. Best advice is get a few different types and see which ones work best in your gun before buying a flat of them

Well, I hate to waste the money opening the chokes. I'm thinkin' no more than I'd use it, this stuff would be great if it works. Guess I'll buy a box or two. I have a 12 gauge loader and can buy the inserts and load my own, too, and not do much worse than buying Walmart ammo.

I've been told that if you load your own shells, you can open your pattern by two chokes depending on how you load. If this is true, you could get your full barrel to shoot IC. ???

Yes, they work.

Many years ago I used the old factory spreader loads with the X-shape cardboard in the shot column for quail in the thick brush. They worked better then dads old full choke!
Not picture perfect patterns for sure.
But they don't need to be up close & personal with a quail in the brush.

Here are some modern spreader wads:

I tried a few of the Polywad Vintager spreaders and they do work. Also, following writer Les Greevy's work with homemade spreaders, I used short sections of drinking straw and made my own.

These last gave about 4" of effective spread more at 32 yards.
