suppressor/ammo question

Will cheap federal rimfire bulkpack ammo stay subsonic out of a 5" barreled pistol or will a shorter barrel be required?

Generally, 4" and shorter is the rule if you want supersonic ammo to stay subsonic out of a .22 pistol.

5" will not reliably stay subsonic with hyper velocity bulk packs. As Prince Yamato suggests, 4" and shorter is the general rule, but even 4" you'll have some break the sound barrier. Standard Velocity .22 will stay subsonic though a few bucks per thousand more expensive.

So, who makes a relatively cheap (under $400), good quality can that can be taken apart for cleaning and is rated for .17hmr, .22wmr & .22lr?
What do you recommend?
Also, what materials for blast baffles are best?

Silencerco Sparrow .22 will do what you want. Stainless steel monocore, but I think it retails a bit more than $400.
Huntertown Arms makes the Kestrel .22 that handles those calibers as well. The MSRP is $400 on it, and can be had for a few bucks less. K baffles.
For a .22, I prefer stainless steel baffles. They clean up easier, and pit less than aluminum.

Any thoughts on the Yankee Hill Mite?
They offer one for all the calibers I want and has an MSRP of $325.

Id stay far away from those 60 grainers. Most 22lr rifles have a 1/16 twist, so they will not reliably stabilize such a long bullet. I am not sure about pistols though. You can have a fast twist barrel and do just fine with them, but by and large they are a bad idea through the can on most rifles or pistols. Don't want to wipe out the baffles do we? Personally with a 6month wait time on the form 4s I would rather be safe than sorry.
Wolf match is subsonic and very accurate. Aquila makes some 40 grain match ammo that is subsonic as well. The aguila match stuff is fairly cheap for how well it shoots most of the time.
If you are using a pistol, winchester dynapoints are plated and will probably be subsonic for you. I have a 4.5 inch barrel on my pistol and I havent had one sonic crack yet even in 30 degree weather.

The slant baffle monocore isn't really efficient. The baffle design of the Sparrow monocore is more efficient. But cost is the big factor.
Personally, I would go with a K Baffle suppressor before I did that one. This one (http://www.huntertownarms.com/guardian22.php)from Huntertown Arms has an MSRP of $229. You can get them with Stainless Steel baffles as well but the cost goes up to $289 (WORTH IT (http://www.huntertownarms.com/guardian22ss.php)!). It will handle your caliber requirements, but you can't go 5.7 with it (which you can with their Kestrel.)
The K Baffle is going to be quieter than that Mite, for sure.
K baffles and .22's are awesome together. They're really hard to beat!!

I sell a lot of 22 cans to people who already bought the Mite.

Thus implying that folks are less than satisfied with the Mite? ;)

Federal bulk pack ($18/550rnds) stays subsonic out of my 5" GSG 1911-22. I don't think I have had a single one go supersonic in about 3k rounds. As little as it probably matters, I am on flat land in the middle of Ohio...I know altitude affects the speed of sound, as does air temperature. My elevation is 1050ft.

Doesn't feed reliably in most of my .22 autos. Other than that it'd be nice :(

The Mite was the first Title II goodie I bought. Attached to a Walther P22 and subsonic ammo I was able to shoot in my mancave and my wife in the next room couldn't hear it.
My favorite suppressed .22 is this AWC Badlander. It's great on grasshoppers.

just to add to redbullits post, i use the 60`s all the time in my 5in lw bbl. from spikes tac. i run them f/a mostly and very reliable. also wondered about the keyhole effect. called spikes before i ordered it and they told me this bbl. is very tight and some will and some won`t keyhole. to this date, mine shoots great and is very accurate. check my targets from time to time and have yet to see keyholes in the paper. maybe just lucky but some 1/16`s do work with the 60 grainers.
