Hey guys I was recently given this gorgeous Smith Model 57. I know nothing about Smiths but now have a growing interest. If anyone could give me any info on this pistol I'd greatly appreciate it.
This appears hand engraved, is this correct? A very very ballpark idea of what they might be valued at? Does Smith designate engraved pistols by "grade"?
The serial number is N707XXX, mfg date? MANY THANKS Y'ALL!

since the trademark is on the left side of the gun it is possible that it is factory engraved. post the pictures and information on the S & W forum as there are some very knowledgeable people on that website

That's a nice looking .41. It was made in 1980. S&W has four levels of engraving. Master (100% coverage), A (75%) B (50%) and C (25%). Yours looks like it has A coverage.
Paul Piquette was a S&W engraver in the early '80s and yours look like his work, but I am not even close to being an expert on these matters.
Get it factory lettered. It's the only way to be sure.

I can't thank y'all enough! I'm going to take your recommendation and attain a factory letter. I'll post the details when I find out.

Great looking model 57. Getting a factory letter confirming that the engraving was done by S&W will add to value.
