It's been known to happen, but that doesn't mean its right. Mine does and I have considered replacing it for a while now.

There's weights inside a lot of them, some brands are loose and they do rattle. It won't affect function.

The answer is yes. Most if not all of the mil spec ones will rattle. Its totally normal.

As stated above..I feel I own about the best one on the market and yes. When I'm slung up tight with a good cheek weld I can hear a little twang in there. She doesn't seem to have an issue finding the X-ring though. ;)

What I found most distracting was the sound of the buffer and spring when I first began shooting AR's.
The best I can describe it is a Choooooing. Not exactly what I expected at first.

Yes, the weights inside, in addition to adding mass to the carrier's action, function similar to a deadblow hammer to kill carrier bounce. You can see varying success here:

In this video, the weights have been removed:

Heavier lube like grease can help with spring sproing.

That's one reason I like the Spikes ST-T2 buffers. They use a weighted powder in the buffer instead of the small weights. It cuts down a little on the noise, and I swear it feels like the gun cycles more smoothly (maybe just an illusion).

Different sounds can and do give one different "feels". Louder "bang" may make you think you have more recoil and things such as that.

Thanks guys. I'm not really an AR guy; I'm well familiar with the AR sproinggg from my SP-1, but I just got a C1 (A1) buttstock from Cavalry Arms (back in business, at least selling stocks/accessories!) and the buffer rattles when I shake it. Sounds like it's nothing to worry about.
The OD color matches well with the Ergo OD grip BTW. It remains to be seen whether they match well with the Magpul forend on my PSA upper (on the way).

If you want to take the twang out of your AR get a JPSCS-15 Silent Captured Buffer Spring system. I just installed one in a Stag Arms 5LH 6.8 SPC and shot it today. What a difference! All the rattling and the "twang" is gone. The felt vibration is also dampened.
Enjoy!

In Carbon-15 AR pistols, they use a weighted plug on the recoil buffer assembly. It's filled with steel bird shot.
It keeps "bounce" down.
FYI, MP5 bolt carriers have hollow insides, with "metallic balls" filling the cavities, for the same reason. It eliminates the bolt from "bouncing" back off the breech face.
