I had a relatively good day at the range today. It didn't start off as well as I would have liked it to, but it ended pretty well. The Sheriffs Dept was using the range I wanted to use, so I had to go to another range (same facility).

I got stuck shooting my new .22 at 100 yards, which I didn't really want to do, especially given the wind that we had. I had gone out there with the intention of seeing what ammo it likes at 50 yards, and I didn't really achieve that. Got some decent groups though.

Anyway, I talked to a deputy out there, and he happened to mention they were going to leave their brass out there. I asked what they were shooting, and as luck would have it, they were shooting .223 and .40, both of which I reload.

So, when they finally left, I started policing their brass, along with a couple other guys.

I ended up with 1030 (give or take) .223, and a couple hundred pieces of .40 brass from them! I also got some .308 off a guy that didn't reload, as well as some other .223 from another guy that didn't reload. Eventually I figured I had as much as I cared to collect, so I left.

BTW, what can you guys tell me about .308 with the headstamp AFF 89? I'm not familiar with it.

I wasn't happy about them putting that range off limits, but whatever. However, I was happy when I realized how much brass I got!

Thanks. And I just saw something that said it was Berdan primed. I checked, it is. Bummer.

Someone mentioned that powder valley sold berdan primers. Might want to hold on to them or if not someone in here would surely buy them.

Not worth mucking with berdan 308. Sell it for scrap.

Congrats on your score.
I feel the same way. Coming home with more brass than you left always make for a good shooting day.

Good find, I was a member at our local police range and used to come home with extra brass. The brass I found in one year more than paid for my membership.

When we go to the range we have to pick it all up. Our rangemaster saves all the brass and they cash it in for scrap and then buy stuff the SWAT team needs. I remember him saying one year they had enough to buy all the guys nice rifle bags from cashing in on the brass

Yeah the local cops use the range that I use also. They have recently started policing brass, and they turn in it to a local ammunition manufacturer, for dicsounts on their next purchase of practice ammo from them. Works for them I suppose, but I miss out on a lot of good brass. Oh well, gotta keep those budgets in check some how...
