I'm looking into entering some "three gun" type matches as a way to practice practical shooting skills. Basically, I'm trying to train for combat/home defense, and I figure the pressure of competition would be the next best thing to FoF exercises in terms of realism.
The problem comes from the fact that I don't have three guns. OK, technically I do own three guns, but one's a single shot 20ga and the other's an old Chi-Com M/N knockoff that I think has headspace issues. The only thing I own that I could realistically use is my Mossie 500. I've seen some local handguns only competitions, and a few rifles only. But I've never seen a shotgun only match around here. I live in Arizona BTW, in a suburb of Phoenix :barf: .
Any advice about what I could do to get some training? Thanks

OBCATS Scattergun Blast - Old Bridge NJ - March 27
US Shotgun Champoinship - Huntsville AL - June 19,20
Northeast Region Shotgun Tactical Match - New Tripoli PA- July 18
You can find contact and entry info for the first two on Brian Enos Forum. I don't think match info is out yet for the third one @ Ontelaunee Rod and Gun, they have a web site. There were also matches this past year at the Cortland County Pistol club in NY. I don't know their 2004 schedule.

Hmmm, know of anything on the West coast? I want to compete, but not enough to cross the Mississippi. :)

Balog, how about Utah?
I don't have a firm date yet, but we will be having an all shotgun match at www.udpl.net sometime this year. I just need to get a date approved by the range.
Me and the other 3 gun match director got inspired after looking at the lay out of the big Alabama match. That and I absolutley love shotguns. :)

Correia: I'd be interested if it's before I ship in August. Will it be the same as a standard 3 gun, but only with a shottie?

Yes, it is going to be our shotgun mega match. Hopefully if all goes well we will turn it into an annual event.

When you don't have what you want where you are, create it. I'm guessing you're at a club. Put a plan for a shoot together and present it to your board or whatever it's called. You run it. You set it up with member help and you make the rules. Most shooters are always looking for something different. A shotguns only course of fire will likely be welcomed. Think plates, pins, maybe a skeet or two, barriers. The possibilities are endless. You can even do a course of fire that requires a single shot shotgun only. This is how all the shooting games started. Some guy said, "I wanna do this."

Correia: sounds good. Let me know when it's going down.
Sunray: actually, I'm not part of a club. The only range I know of in my part of town is a pistol-only indoor affair. I've looked around a wee bit but I haven't found any clubs. Could be I'm looking in the wrong places, tho.

Phoenix Rod and Gun Club has a shotgun only match. The fourth Sunday match alternates each month between shotgun only and 3-gun. I believe that this weekend's match is Shotgun only. Details at Phoenixpractical.com.
