Dances With “The Earl”

Why would anyone want to buy a 22 magnum NAA Earl???

I don’t think it has a particular purpose that can’t be done better with another tool. Of course there are a couple of reasons to give it a try...

1. It just looks almost as cool as a 1957 T-bird with Jessica Alba in it.

2. It’s a 1860 Remington mini replica, which is just two years displaced from the 1858 that the Pale Riding Preacher used to blast gold stealing bad guys...

3. You could possibly have 300 bucks that the wife doesn’t know about...

4. Or lastly & most important, it bears my Dad’s name, so there is no way that I would skip on ownership, since he taught me to hunt & shoot and I consider it a tribute to him...

After skipping a couple hours work this morning and driving out to the range, I started with five rounds of CCI shotshells. I didn’t grade my shooting per shot, but the five rounds covered the 12 inch shoot-n-c pretty nicely & punched through the doubled cardboard at 10 yards with no problem. I do believe that I will use “The Earl” as a snake charmer while hunting.

Next, I took a fiver of Federal 22 wmr at the 3in square in the center of the 12in target. I was a bit surprised to place all five within the smaller square with a touching pair. 3 more cylinders proved just as accurate at 10 yards as all shots danced within the small square. I then got a bit cocky & tried smaller targets using Critical Defense & the rest of the Federals. The results were the same. I didn’t take the time to try and get one hole groups but I’m pretty sure, a better shooter than myself could give it a run for the money. I was absolutely giddy with the results. After about 40 rounds, I switched to Fiocchi and my groups opened up a little. I don’t know if it was the bullets or that the cylinder had warmed up quit a bit. It could have been me just as easily, even though the grouping wasn’t bad for such a small pistola. All shots were kill zone anyways. Though I sent another 20 shots downrange it was time to call it quits as I had a brand-new-to-me-used Springfield EMP 9mm with me as well, but that’s a different report.

Sorry that I didn’t have my camera to prove the little gun’s worth, but here’s a pic of “The Dirty Earl” which hasn’t been cleaned yet. I’m waiting for the Little Lady to go to bed so I can clean it for the first time without those evil questioning eyes burning through my neck and into my soul..

The might be the single most brilliant title I've ever read in my life. However, you would have had to grow up with me to understand why I think that. Oh, and nice write up on the NAA.

i want one. but that said most of my guns serve no purpose other than to be my gun. i also want a .22 short just because.

i have a standard .22mag version that i almost always have in my pocket.

All you'll get out of me is agreement on all counts.

My own "The Earl" was bought on a bit of a whim due to my already having a pair of Uberti 1858's. But it has since turned out to be a great little gun in its own right. It took a little while to learn to hold it but now I can get 2 inch groups at 12'ish yards with it quite reliably other than the odd flyer here and there when I slip up.

I recently took it out to a local Speed Steel night and at the end of the regular gun time I brought it out for folks to try. Not many managed to hit much of anything due to the unfamiliarity with it. But I popped off 5 at an 8 inch disc out at around 16 to 18 yards and got 4 out of 5 hits.

There's no doubt that the extra barrel and sight baseline length compared to the other pug nosed NAA guns makes this sort of accuracy a lot easier to achieve.

I have The Earl as well, also bought it on a whim. It's a cute little sucker and fun to shoot. A friend told me it reminded her of a dualing pistol. It's been sleeping in my safe for over a year now along with some little NAA key chain pistol, I can't recall the model name. I think it's time to wake up The Earl and take him dancing...

I kinda want the magnum black powder version. I already have a super companion with a spare cylinder and think the cylinders will fit.

Always wanted a NAA, but being named after my Dad & having a 4" barrel made it impossible to pass up.

Don't let it sit too long in the safe. I quarantee the smile on your face will return as soon as it goes bang again.

I have a 1 5/8" .22/.22mag version with the 'holster grip'. It is a quality little piece. Lately, I only use .22lr cylinder. (I'm not bragging on the accuracy though).
