I was looking at this gun http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewBidHistory.aspx?Item=277151743 and noticed the same people are bidding mulitple times in a row. Why are the same people bidding against themselves?

You have three bidders there.

Each one of them wants the gun.

So they are going to bid against one another in order to be the high bidder.

This is how auctions work.

Also, read how the AutoBid system works: http://www.gunbroker.com/User/HowToBuy.aspx#autobid
AutoBid

Our auction site has a feature called AutoBid. When you place a bid on a firearm, you are entering the maximum amount you are willing to pay for an item. AutoBid always bids the least it can to win. When you are outbid, AutoBid will raise its bid. It will never bid more than your maximum. If the item has a Reserve Price, AutoBid will attempt to meet the Reserve Price.

To use AutoBid, simply enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the firearms, ammunition, knives, or gun accessories in the bid amount field when placing a bid.

If you place a bid and the bid posted is less than what you thought you bid, it is most likely due to our AutoBid system. Learn more about AutoBid.

Also note that the times of the bids are not in chronological order, but value order. The bid history does not show automatic bids place by the system. Actual bid order looks like this:

3/11/2012 1:46:50 PM EST * Will221 A+(188) Puts in a max bid but since he is first, it meets minimum bid only.
3/11/2012 8:15:08 PM EST * yenyere1. D(1) Enters several bids, not more than Will221's bid.
3/11/2012 8:15:39 PM EST * yenyere1. D(1) Each of these blue bids raises Will221's bid closer to his max.
3/11/2012 8:16:07 PM EST * yenyere1. D(1)
3/11/2012 8:16:59 PM EST * yenyere1. D(1)
3/11/2012 8:17:36 PM EST * yenyere1. D(1) Gives up trying to beat Will221's max bid.
3/12/2012 2:04:19 PM EST * jmv456 A+(13)Enters several manual bids, not more than Will221's bid.
3/12/2012 2:04:32 PM EST * jmv456 A+(13)None of these green bids exceed Will221's max bid.
3/12/2012 2:04:46 PM EST * jmv456 A+(13)
3/12/2012 2:04:59 PM EST * jmv456 A+(13)Finally places bid higher than Will221's bid. System adjusts winning bid to one increment above Will221's bid. Know he knows approximately what Will221 bid.
3/13/2012 9:33:23 PM EST * jmv456 A+(13)Raises his own max bid, probably closer to what he's willing to pay. His max isn't reached until the bid below is placed
3/14/2012 8:48:14 PM EST * Will221 A+(188) Places bid higher than jmv456's max.
3/14/2012 9:56:17 PM EST * jmv456 A+(13) Places higher bid than Will221's max
