.223 oal ?

I am working on developing a load for a friends rifle and my new Encore pistol with some 40gr Vmax. The data from Hodgdon and LEE say Min OAL is 2.280 for both powders I am trying out (Benchmark & Varget).

The factory Hornady 40gr Vmax is a lot shorter than 2.280. The data from Hodgdon for all the 40gr loads is 2.280 Min OAL and Lee states differing OAL for each powder.

If you enjoyed reading about ".223 oal ?" here in TheHighRoad.org archive, you'll LOVE our community. Come join TheHighRoad.org today for the full version!

I'm not following the minimum OAL situation you're talking about.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying?

I don't know where you got that 2.280" information???
Except that IS the MAX OAL for the .222 Rem Magnum, not the .223 Rem.

The SAAMI MAX OAL for the .223 with any bullet is 2.260" in any book you look at.

40 grain bullets seat way shorter then that.

Lyman says the 40 V-Max seated 2.215" in their testing.
Hornady #6 reloading manual says 2.200".

I don't know where you got that 2.280" information???

Actually, www.hodgdon.com does have that dimension listed for the 40gr Nosler BT, and that is wrong, as you mentioned.

mnhntr, try to stick with around 2.200" as rcmodel mentioned. Try to keep a caliber width in the case neck.

In the Lee book I have is the "Modern Reloading 2nd Edition" and it specifies 2.280 Min OAL. Also the Hodgdon website is saying 2.280.

NCsmitty, thanks that is what I found. I did load them at 2.280 but I will re-seat them when I get home.

Yep! I just looked at the Lee book you have and it does say that about the 40 grain jacketed bullet of unknown make & model in a bunch of loads.

But it is wrong too.
Except for the chamber drawing at the top of page 222 which says 2.260".

SAAMI Max OAL for the .223 is and always has been 2.260".

That is the longest cartridge that will fit in an M16 magazine, as well as more other .223 magazines & chambers.

Thanks rcmodel. I am loading these for two firearms, a TC encore pistol and a Savage rifle.

I think the Lee book is wrong because of the fact they took the info from the Hodgdon site.

Zactly.

Everything in the Lee manual is copied directly from the powder & bullet manufactures published data.

Lee has no testing lab.

I believe the 40gr Vmax factory loads are 2.260

The OP isn't loading for an AR.
The OAL of 2.260 is for the magazine compatibility. With a T/C you need to find out the free bore to the rifling to ascertain the absolute length of the round with what ever bullet you're going to use. With any bullet, it would be recommended that you seat the bullet no less than .224 into the neck. The longer the projectile, the deeper you might need to seat but still the minimum is basically no less than the diameter of the bullet.
The info is good to go.

BTW, google precision .223 loads. lots of info.

The thing is though, he ask about loading 40 grain boat-tail bullets.

At some point not too far past 2.260", they are going to fall out of his cases and spill all the powder in his pocket!

"With any bullet, it would be recommended that you seat the bullet no less than .224 into the neck. The longer the projectile, the deeper you might need to seat but still the minimum is basically no less than the diameter of the bullet."(in my post above)

This applies to any bullet in any caliber. I know that if he loaded to 2.260 the bullet would indeed probably fall out.

I removed my statement from here as I said that's why there are load books. Hodgden is wrong.

Actually they are loaded to 2.280 right now and the bullet is in enough to stay without being accidently pulled or falling out. I asked the question because of the difference in pressure and that was my concern.

I asked the question because of the difference in pressure and that was my concern.

Bottle neck rifle rounds are affected much less by bullet depth than straight case pistol rounds, and that's generally a product of the burn rates of the powders used. Sometimes a few thousandths of bullet depth in a pistol round, can make a big difference on pressures and accuracy and even safety, but with bottle neck rifle rounds, not so much. It is usually not an issue unless you're leaning on the lands too much with a long, heavy .224 bullet.

I saw this info this past month and tried loading some 40gr Sierra hp to 2.280 for my Contender and felt very uncomfortable doing so. I was truly afraid of the bullet coming out. I seated them back to 2.220.

May I also suggest a bit faster powder for a short barrel and a 40gr bullet?
IMR-4198 is the ticket from my experience. Superb accuracy with much less boom and muzzle flash.

A very useful tool when loading for single shot firearms where OAL "can be" adapted in some cases exceeding factory recommended OAL specs is a taper crimp die such as the one I use from Redding. I began using this die loading for a Handi Rifle for the same reasons stated above where 45 gr. bullets were seating a mere .200 into the case necks with a .015 setback off of the lands. I tested the rounds with and without using the taper crimp and the results were impressive indeed. By creating a more uniform starting pressures the groups tightened up nicely and flyers were a thing of the past. Another note on single shot loading that for me has provided an edge is neck sizing only of the cases. These cases must be kept seperated and dedicated for the specific firearm they are to be used in.

Keep the lead flying,

I set them back to 2.260 and we will see how they run. Thanks for the tip on the 4198

I run 2.20" in my Mini-14, longest I can go and still feed in the magazine. This is with 55 grain bullets.

I too seen in some reloading data website.. One was Nosler, that has the 40 gr, to col at 2.280,, but I looked again now. it has them to 2.260 for the 40 gr,it seems the manuels have dif, col for dif. company bullets...
I had printed pages of data for 40 gr to 60 gr,, and it seems that they all have dif, col...

I run 2.20" in my Mini-14, longest I can go and still feed in the magazine. That would be strange indeed.

No NATO Mil-Spec M885 or SS109 ammo loaded an average of 2.247" would fit in a Mini-14 magazine if that were the case.

It seems to all fit in mine, up to the SAAMI standard Max length of 2.260".

So I guess these are all wrong... I will try seating my 223 bullets to .224 like RC said.. But this is what drives me crazy,, you read col. and this is from the powder or bullets company,, and Its wrong?

My god man??
How long did it take you to research and type all that!

I bow to you, for your perservence and dedication in the persuit of the perfect OAL!!

But you need to know that all published OAL is only the OAL they tested the loads at.

It is not the perfect OAL for the bullet, your gun, your magazine, or even the recommended OAL for any gun.

It is just the tested OAL in a pressure barrel, and a place for us to start seeing if the tested OAL will fit in our guns begin our load development.

My SOP is always to seat one caliber deep in rifles, and see if they will chamber.

I was never real big on trying to reach the rifling.
In most rifles anymore, you can't anyway with light bullets, so why try?

I don't know 280shooter, you pasted the whole list off Hodgdon and it is not all wrong. Maybe the Nosler's that are listed need a longer COAL but that is why the bullet and powder manufacture's have email and help numbers.

The OP asked about a Hornady bullet and as rc said, Hornady list's it at 2.200.

The Nosler bullet is question listed on the Hodgdon site as needing 2.280 is listed by Nosler at 2.260. But if you compare Nosler's data to Hodgdon, you see that Hodgdon shoved about one half to one more grain of powder in their load with the extra length. That is why we have to work up our loads and use multiple sources before we start. :scrutiny:

thats why I always use multiple sources ,I use old and new reloading books. I find it interesting how the same company will change some of the MAX, charge,,I had bought the new hornady book.and I look up say my 280, x bullets x powder. I go what the h,,l. my god all them bullets I been shooting are 4 grs over max.. what did I do,,I then get the 3 hornady book, and sure enough..what I loaded say 10 years ago was not Max, but is now..So I then dig out my other reloading books and start reading again..Ya just never know. powder chnges and bullets changes, Ya jjust have to keep up on it all..

Turns out I made a dumb statement, my factory PMC 55 grain rounds are at 2.250" and they feed fine in the Mini. So I'll just keep them shorter than 2.250".

I haven't looked at, or used published OAL's in many years. And as to how much bullet needs to be in the neck, that too is only a problem if it becomes a problem, in my opinion. When I seat light weight varmit bullets for various cartridges and rifles, it has sometimes taken the bullet to less than half the diameter in the neck, and I've yet to experience powder spilling or bullets falling out of the cases. And I've never been able to physically pull those bullets without the use of a puller.

But for a new reloader, the minimum of bullet diameter in the neck is a good starting place I suppose.
