I am thinking of buying a Glock17C, the comped version of the G17.

MayI I ask you guys/gals 3 questions :

1) do the ports , in your experience, significantly reduce muzzle-rise, or hardly?

2) are they blinding in low light, or quite tolerable?

3) do the ports get all gummed up and are the stains on the slide reasonably easy to clean?

Thanks, friends. I must decide this weekend so your timely response will be much appreciated.

no direct expierience, but 1 & 2 are dependent on the load that you are shooting, and don't know about 3, but i would guess that it'll require just a little more cleaning.
on another note, comped guns are louder. if this is a defensive pistol, you may burn yourself with the gases if you fire with the gun close to your body. also the comps blow out more debris.

I second what Quack said...the amout of muzzle "flash" through the ports depends on the ammo that you are using...most of your cheaper "plinking" ammo is gonna have more flash than say some of the "designer" brands....As for as muzzle rise is concerned...the faster a bullet is going the more efficient the ports are gonna be...

I dont worry to much about being burned with the gas from the ports...To me if you are in a situation where you are shooting for your life then being burned is the least of your worries...but that is MY OPINION...I like the "comped" Glocks and have shot the G17 on several range trips...As far as noise?? yea they tend to be louder and I wouldnt recommend them for a "home defense" pistol...

They are a whole bunch of fun to shoot:D :D

I've shot several Glocks... probably most non-ported models, in fact. And I've shot a lot of other guns as well... I'm not what I would call recoil sensitive, but for defensive purposes, I can't imagine using a comped G17 The 'C' model Glock I've ever shot was a G23 and a G29 with an aftermarket longer than factory ported barrel.

While porting no doubt makes a difference in hot loads with the G29, I can't imagine there being a world of difference with standard or +P 9mm loads in a full size pistol such as the G17. Maybe to folks in competition where every hundredth of a second counts, but for a guy (or gal) wanting to defend himself on the street and certainly for a guy in a home or building, a Glock 17C makes about as much sense as Magna Porting a Ruger 10/22. Of course, you could always get a non-ported barrel but unless I was getting a very good deal ($350 or less) on the G17C, I'd just get the G17 or G19 and be done with it.

From my experience with a 22C

1) No, infact I shot a friend's plain 23 better than my own 22C.

2) Depends on ammo.

3) No, and nothing that a Q-tip and some solvent couldn't easily fix. The ports in the slide are considerably larger than the ones in the bbl, which are pretty small. Neither ever plugged up on me, even after 500+ rounds w/o cleaning (just to see if I could).

All in all, I think it was a waste of $30 for the C model.

Thanks. Given your comments and those of others, it's the regular 17 for me.
