I want a suppressed bolt action 308

I'm looking at starting my next long term project: a suppressed bolt action 308 and could use some input. I was thinking a 18-20" barrel in a stainless or other rust resistant finish (East texas is not forgiving to blued guns) and a laminate or synthetic stock.

My original plan was to build one from the ground up using a savage action because they are easy to rebarrel and come in left hand. ** left hand is a must ** Then ruger came out with their gunsite rifle in left hand. I don't really need the irons or scout rail, or magazine system, but I'm not really opposed to them either, and the ruger would be cheaper than a rebarreled and restocked savage.

Does anybody have any strong opinions one way or the other? Should I be looking at a different action or caliber (I'll be reloading subsonics regardless) 338 whisper maybe? If anybody has a suppressed bolty, suppressed 308, or ruger gunsite I'd love to see pics, hear your opinions and advice etc.

I'd like to keep the total package under $2000 or so, including suppressor, which sadly rules out some of the cool custom actions.

Since it is a bolt action you wont hear an action slamming back so subsonic isnt really all that necessary.

If you want an inexpensive factory gun look at the rem 700 AAC packages. Consider 300blk too

good thoughts, but neither of those are left handed, but the proliferation on threaded barrels is encouraging. I had not seen that hog hunter.

Even shooting supersonic, the difference that suppressor makes on a .308 is AMAZING!

That Savage hog hunter is on my list. Only thing I'd change on it would be a removable magazine. The Axis line also has a .308/ threaded barrel option.

My buddy bought a SPS .308 and had the barrel cut and threaded. All came in under $500. It is a tackdriver and super quiet to boot.

OOPS, just saw the LEFT part....

Tikka makes a left handed stainless model. Here is an example...

the tikka is way sexy. I've handled several. I"m concerned about hanging a heavy suppressor on those thin barrels though.

Helotaxi, I was sold on the 308 suppressor when the guy next to me had one on a stealth recon scout. 308 sounded like a 22. maybe a 22 mag.

My Tikka in 6.5x55 is the best shooting rifle I own. It would be the last rifle to ever leave.

My friends 308 has a standard profile barrel. It is just fine with the extra weight. Would say the Tikka will be fine.

Got a suppressor in mind yet?

not yet. Like I said, it's a long term project. Titanium ones to reduce weight have appeal, except for the price. I know that the LGS demo suppressor rifle with the 24" barrel with a steel can hanging off the end of it won't fly for me as it is way too muzzle heavy. I don't know if they exist, but a take apart 30 cal can would be nice since I'd like to shoot cheap cast lead bullets through it. I'm hoping that in the next couple of years suppressors get smaller, lighter, cheaper, and that pigs will fly.

Someone I know very well, has a suppressed Savage .308; he's very happy with it. It has the fat-looking barrel with so many inches of rifling and then built-in baffles. The rifle is all matte black/black stock; with accutrigger. I can find out the company he ordered it from if interested. But many people prefer the threaded or other route.

I picked up this integral suppressed FN Patrol in .308 from John's Guns, now known as fullysuppressed.com. It uses subsonic ammo only. It's hearing safe.

Don't forget the 200 bucks the suppressor stamp will cost you. Just buy an off the shelf decient rifle and have a smith fit a suppressor to it.....chris3

I have an old school Rugger 77 suppressed rifle. It was built back in the days when Ciener wasn't a dirty word and he did really good work. This was a heavy barrel .308 he turned the barrel down on for the suppressor and then made a sleeve for use when the suppressor was being used.

For a long time I used cases made for the low powder weights a subsonic load required. In a large case a small powder charge can be very sensitive to it's position in the case and the resulting SD can cause accuracy issues. Today I load Trail Boss as it uses much of the case space and stays subsonic. The link below is a video of me shooting it under a steel overhead cover. Compare my voice level to the sound level of the rounds being fired...

thanks for the pics and video clips. It doesn't make me want one any less. Just for funzies, if you were to use it only with subsonics, could you use a pistol can? maybe for a 9mm?
