If Zimmerman has previously been arrested for assaulting a cop, why was he allowed to own a handgun, let alone carry one? Shouldn't he be in jail for illegal possession of a firearm? Or is Florida law different?

Well first off. Being "arrested" for and being "convicted" of is two different things.

Oh fair enough. I thought he was convicted of assault since he had been arrested for hitting his gf and hitting a police officer.

Let this be a lesson that assumption is not always sound practice :)

Apparently not convicted? Or, reduced to a misdemeanor?

If anybody has actual knowledge, okay, post. But no speculation, please.

From an online newspaper site - can't remember which one (I wonder if this is the extent of his record?)

In 2005 Zimmerman was arrested and charged with resisting officer with violence and battery of law enforcement officer, both 3rd degree felonies-charges were reduced to resisting officer without violence and waived when he entered an alcohol education program. Some claim he shoved an officer who was questioning a friend for alleged underage drinking at a bar.

Same year, his ex-fiancee filed for a restraining order claiming domestic violence. Zimmerman counterfiled with his own restraining order – both restraining orders were granted.

In 2006, Zimmerman was charged with speeding!

The speeding did it for me! :D

Everything I've read on it says the 3 cases were "Closed" with no convictions.

Most of the comments mention that his father was a "former Orange County magistrate."

Here's one report www.sodahead.com/united-states/would-zimmerman-have-had-a-license-to-carry-a-gun-if-his-father-wasnt-a-judge/question-2545277/

Art, everyone:

I've been writing about this case for about 10 days now in my Examiner column. Zimmerman was charged but the charge was dropped.
He also had a rather oddball (or maybe not..maybe Henry Bowman can weigh in) domestic violence thing going with an ex-fiance; charges and counter charges and finally the grown-ups evidently sat them down :banghead:

This thing has grown into a political theater. In my Saturday entry, I posed a couple of questions:

Should Zimmerman be arrested?
Should Sharpton be arrested?

One may be suspected of homicide. The other might be promoting civil unrest.

As always, a good "High Road" discussion ;)

It's amazing that all we hear about from protesters are calls to see Zimmerman "arrested".

That's what they want to see. An arrest.

As mentioned, there are big differences between being arrested, being charged, and then being convicted.

Okay. Zim's history of involvement with Officialdom has pretty-much been adequately covered. Nuff.
