Is the P232 still made in 9mm or just 380? I understand they have the P239 but I am fond of the P232 styling. TIA

to my knowlege the 232 (or the 230 for that matter) was never made in 9x19mm. it was and is made in 9mm kurtz or 9mm short aka .380 acp.

I believe the predecessor of the 232, the P230, was designed for and briefly offered in the 9x18 Ultra which was a "souped" up .380 one millimeter longer. I believe it was designed to be for police use in Germany but was superseded by the switch to 9x19. Someone else may have more info or clarification.

The 230's were made in 9mm Kurz(.380), 32 ACP(7.65 auto), and 9mmUltra. The Ultra is longer than a .380, roughly a 9x18, but not the Makarov round. I believe it came out prior to WW II. I've never seen or heard of any 9mmUltra models and very few 32acp versions.
The 232's only came in .380.

230's were supposedly designed around the 9x18 ultra caliber and due to its lack of popularity was dropped. Its never been made in a 9mm Luger/Para/fill in the blank, as far as I know.
Shoot well.

The 9mm Ultra came about as the Germans were working on a pistol round that would require less materials to make yet still render adequate stopping power due to the shortages they started to experience when the the 1,000 year Reich started to fall 988 years short.
I'll not comment on the other cartridge and firearms designs that the Russians copied, improved upon and then started a folk lore story claiming to their masses they came up with the idea.
I will say they were fond of dissassembling factories and machinery in Germany, piece by piece and then taking it back to mother Russia. I wish Sig still made the 9 x 18 in a P232.
An Estonian gentleman who was an armorer for the Soviet forces at one time told me the intention of the 9 x 18 Makarov was to create a tumbling bullet that might not offer pinpoint accuracy but instead would do great damage to an enemy soldier in a small package. I don't know. Most Maks I have shot have been pretty accurate.
