How Many 1911s do you own?

White reading the "Why Own a 1911" I noticed a lot of the posts had reference to the amount of 1911s they own.

How many do you own? Half of my pistol collection is 1911s and BHPs.

*Edit, I was curious about those that liked and owned the platform, I thought it went without saying haters did not own any, thats why zero is not an option. I apologize for making anyone feel left out.

I currently have 3 and have plans for, 4. I have 3 Springfield Armory pistols. a older one that's mid way between a Mil Spec and a GI. How it came from the factory. a later Mil Spec that I've modded to add a few nice features, beaver tail, flat trigger, etc, and a 2010 Ultra Compact Loaded. It conceals VERY nice. The 4th will be a Commander / Champion, with a bobbed tail. What brand depends on which one I find. Maybe a Dan Wesson or Ed Brown direct from them as configured. Or I'll find one and bob the tail myself.

I'm more into innovatoin and progress
That is exactly WHY you should own a 1911. When you talk about a pistol that made the MOST innovation and the BIGGEST leap forward, progress it is the 1911. Granted nothing really new to that design since, but when you look at all the other auto's out there, they have only made very small steps away from the design. Tuner will tell you over and over and over ;) that Browning's fingerprints are all over the design of the Glock.

Zip. Zilch. Nada.

I'll probably buy the Ruger one day and it might be the only and last one I ever buy. Just to have really.

Lacking an applicable option in the poll, I voted 9.

Right now, three, all Colt Commanders. Over the years, 35-40 of various makes and models.

Colts and GI guns were always the best bet and most reliable.

The aggravation of dealing with most of the others, is why I gave up on them. I wouldnt take a new Springfield or Kimber if you gave it to me.

Right now I have 12 1911s - 5 Colts, 2 Detonics, 1 Springfield, 1 S&W, 1 Para Ordnance, 1 GSG .22, and an AMT Automag V (think 1911 on 'roids). The number rises and falls from time to time.

Two and a half at the moment,

SW 1911 ltd edition in high polished stainless, no fwrd serrations and original-style guide-rod and plug. It is my most trusted semi-auto, and my primary carry 95% of the time. It is a JOY to shoot. I'm about 3000 rounds deep and the only failure ever was a stovepipe with winchester white box. I'm pretty sure that one stovepipe was the round's fault not the gun's.

Recently purchased Cimmaron 1911, which is a spruced up Armscor with a few older-style elements to it, in mirror-polished blued finish. I am impressed with this gun, I basically bought it for its gorgeous finish and older-style, but was delighted by its accuracy at distance. It also feeds defense JHPs no problem, which was a surprise too, thought I was going to need a feed-ramp job on it. I did have to send the slide back in for re-bluing as it had flaws on the side when NIB. I'm several hundred rounds in without any function issues.

I also have the Kimber .22 conversion upper, and four mags for it. It works perfectly on the smith, but the slide to frame fit is pretty snug on the Cimarron, so often times it doesn't eject or doesn't return to battery. I've found that the more I've used it on that frame the more function-performance improves . Starting to get to be only one failure per mag last time I tried that combo. The funny part is that the smith's slide to frame fit is tight as a drum, and the Cimarron rattles, so I would have expected the .22 kit to fit the Cimarron better. It functions so well on the smith, I participated in a competitive rim-fire plate shoot at a local club not long ago, and the director had to come over to ask and see what I used. He said he wasn't watching but had heard my shots and hits, which were quite fast! :D I was up against some folks that had compensated target .22s with red-dots on 'em, and I gave 'em a good run for their money.

There's no other pistol that has a trigger quite like a 1911, they work great for me I love 'em. I feel very safe when using them.

April 4, 2012, 11:06 AM
Geeze, answering this has caused me to realize that I own twelve. There're these (excuse the inevitable incursion of Hi Powers, a CZ and the 1911's usurper - the M-9). My long slide would be there if it fit and the extra Kimbers stay away due to redundancy.
For variation there's ACP, wadcutter, .22, 10mm, 9x23/.38 Super, MEUSOC, Det-1, my only true surplus 1911 and some others.

Winkman822
April 4, 2012, 02:27 PM
Presently, I be havin four 1911s, a Kimber Eclipse Target II, a Kimber Royal II (the one with rosewood rather than bone grips), a Springfield TRP Stainless, and my Wilson Combat CQB Compact. At one time I was up to as many as 8 or 9, but the extras went away as they did little more than occupy shelf space. The others were a Springfield MC Operator, a Springfield Loaded Target B/SS, a Springfield EMP 9, a Kimber Desert Warrior, and a Colt CCO.

Right now I'm giving serious thought to getting either a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special sans front cocking serrations, an Ed Brown Special Forces, or a full size Wilson Combat CQB.

I owned five at one point (two Colts, two Kimbers, and an early DW), but I'm currently down to one...and I'm fine with that. As much as I love the platform, I find that there are other guns I'd much rather carry on a daily basis and/or use to defend my family/home. My 1911 stays in the safe (unloaded) while an M&P goes on my hip every day.

Life is too short to waste time on guns that need "tinkering" to operate properly.

Colt Double Eagle Officers 10mm/.40S&W combo stainless slide blued frame aftermarket grips

But that's got me hooked into saving for a Commander size to carry IWB.

I have one, I owned one other, but the one I have now is so perfect for me that I sold off the PT 1911 (and I'm not a Taurus hater).

Sort of off subject, but in a Poll that starts with "One", why do people need to come in to justify owning "None"? I can see the people commenting on "none and want one", but if you know you have no use or desire for a 1911, why jump in?

Fourteen if I can count my Para-Ord LDAs, eight if just counting singe actions. SINGLE ACTIONS: Two Colt 1991A1 Series 80s a Gov't and a Compact both .45ACP; Two Auto-Ord/Thompsons a Gov't and a "competition" both .45s; AMT 'Hardballer' .45; AMT frame w/Colt Conversion Unit upper .22LR; Kimber 'ProCarry II 9mm; and a Custom 'Remsports' Target .40S&W. Para-Ord LDAs: Single stack .45; Single stack 'Limited' .45; Double stack .45; Double stack .45 'Limited'; Double stack .40S&W; and Single stack 'PDA' 9mm.
I do like my 1911 platforms. Many moons ago I shot on an Air Force base pistol team and learned to shoot and love the 1911. Nothing else fits my hand as well. I also shoot a couple Hi-Powers and like them too, a 9mm and a .40S&W. Keep shootin' and check 6.

(weird! no grip safety?? mine will have one)

Believe it or not, in the late '70s/ early '80s, it wasn't uncommon for serious gunnies to pin the grip safety. My dad's old Remington Rand is that way.

...I find that there are other guns I'd much rather carry on a daily basis and/or use to defend my family/home...

:scrutiny:The OP simply asked how many people have. This is like being asked "what kind of race car do you have" and answering, "they get poor mileage." :scrutiny:

If you'll take a moment to reread my post you'll see that I answered the OP's question in the first sentence of my response:

I owned five at one point (two Colts, two Kimbers, and an early DW), but I'm currently down to one...and I'm fine with that. As much as I love the platform, I find that there are other guns I'd much rather carry on a daily basis and/or use to defend my family/home. My 1911 stays in the safe (unloaded) while an M&P goes on my hip every day.

Life is too short to waste time on guns that need "tinkering" to operate properly.

You may want to turn off the computer once in a while and spend some time working on your reading comprehension. ;)

None as of yet but eventual goal, at least three:

One set up for home defense with rail and light/laser combo,
One set up for race guns though I doubt I'll ever get in to it, and
One set up for long distance bullseye shooting.

Stasher, how about you take some time to think about the relavence of you bashing the platform with your answer. The OP asked for how many one owned, not your opinion of them. Why don't you take your own advice?

No bashing, just facts.

If you don't want to read others' views and experiences, perhaps you should create your own forum where you can start threads and be the only one to respond to them. That way you'd never have to deal with anyone else's opinions. ;)

Sounds like the first two Springfields I bought back in the early 80's for $250 each. They came in a plastic bag like you describe, and you had to assemble them. They were the best of all the Springfields I owned. Back then, they still made them pretty much to GI specs. To bad they strayed as time went on.

You left out 0. I was an Army tanker & armorer in the 80's. Soured me on the 1911 permanently. I'll take a Glock or a S&W Model 10 instead every time.

My wife wants one & I'll help her buy it. But she won't need to worry about me wanting it.

I own more 1911 style pistols than any other type. To paraphrase a question once asked of J. Paul Getty "how many 1911's would it take to make you happy?" The answer being "more!". Have them in .45acp, 10mm, 40S&W, 9mm, 22 rimfire ..and just today I was looking at one of the Armscorp .22TCM/9mm combos ..wbich I just might add to my "1911 family"! Did I mention I like 1911s? -LG

None. I've never owned one and probably never will. The capacity is too low and the weight too high for this platform to be of any practical use to me. I do think they are pretty and they make great range toys but I don't buy guns as decorations or playthings.

You should have read my OP, I was not looking for your insight if you do not own one. The goal of the pole was to see how many owned more than one and it appears the answer is about 70%

Interesting, in my opinion, capacity is an issue, are you having trouble hitting what you shoot at? Perhaps you should search for a platform with better ergonomics for you personally so your performance increases. One of the reasons I like the 1911 is that is a natural pointer for me, same with the BHP and my Walther PPS. Just a friendly suggestion :) Hope I was helpful.

I shot Glocks for 15yrs, then I grew up, my tastes refined and I sold them off to buy 1911's. Three and a half to be specific......with more to come.

Two "real" ones (Kimber ST II 10mm and Colt Mk IV .45), and two psuedo-1911's (Star Model A 9x23L, Llama IIIa .380).

I voted 2
