I've got a plastic & sheet metal semiauto that fires Winchester's newfangled short .30 caliber round, but for "battle rifles" as in "rifles that may well have seen battle", well:

Schmidt-Rubin M96/11, M1896 Swedish Mauser, Mosin-Nagant M1891, M1917 Enfield (Eddystone), Type 99 Arisaka, Chiang Kai Shek Mauser, Mauser 98k ('43byf), Krag-Jorgensen M1896 carbine, Hungarian Mosin-Nagant M44, FR-8.

I know...it's not a 'battle rifle'. However, it is a .308 bolt rifle. No super sniper fantasies here, but if pressed into duty, it'll work perfectly.
Savage package rifle, short action, .308

Is that an orginal military scope/mount on there?

When I started this thread, I was hoping for things like FALs and M14s...but you C&R Folks have taken over.

NOT A PROBLEM. You guys have some BEAUTIFUL old rifles. Keep 'em coming.

Unfortunately, not original to that rifle, it began life as a 1903A4, but somewhere between the time it came off Remington's wartime production line and the time I grabbed it, it had been reduced to a stripped receiver. Then the fun began, researching the proper parts and finding them all over Gawd's Green Earth, right in the middle of the Saving Private Ryan craze. :D

Please bear with my ignorance, but what is the difference between a 'battle' rifle or an 'assault' rifle? Do they not achieve the same ends?

Marko Kloos
January 31, 2003, 10:32 PM
A battle rifle is usually defined as a military issue rifle which shoots a full-power cartridge, such as 8mm Mauser, .30-06, or 7.62x51mm. Battle rifles can be bolt-action, or autoloaders. Rifles in this category include the Mauser and Enfield variants, the HK G3, the U.S. M1 Garand, the M14, and the FN FAL.

An assault rifle is usually defined as a select-fire automatic rifle shooting an intermediate cartridge, such as the 8mm Kurz, 7.62x39mm, or 5.56x45mm (a.k.a.223 Remington). Rifles in this category include the StG44, the AK-47 series, the M-16 series, and most current military issue rifles like the FAMAS or the British SA-80.

Semi-auto variants of military assault rifles are *not* properly termed assault rifles. An assault rifle, by definition, is a select-fire weapon capable of full-auto and semi-auto fire. If it can't shoot bursts, it's not an assault rifle, regardless of liberal gun-banner terminology.

In reality, those battle rifles are really, "old war horses" and the assault rifles are the battle rifles of today. Very few countrys today field a 7.62x51(or equivalent) rifle as their MBR. So doesnt that in fact make the lowly AR and AK the MBR of today and relagate the others to reserve or home forces? Even at that, the reserves carry M16's.
