What is the law on shipping a 100rd drum for an AK within the US? Can I just ship UPS Ground? Do I need anything special?

No Federal restrictions (so long as it's not loaded!). You can send it however you like, including Priority Mail.

The issues come in when you look at the state level. Mags over a certain capacity are banned in a number of states.
You can find a good reference here: State Mag Bans (http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/NoHiCapChemSpray.pdf)

Where are you shipping it from/to?

Federally it's a piece of metal. Statewise depends on local laws on mag capacity possibly. Check the state/city law on the receiving location to see if it might be a "banned" large capacity mag, if so don't ship there by any means at all. If not, ship it any way you want.

If you are really concerned, you can take it apart. I don't know about the other restrictive states, but in Cali if it is not assembled, it is not a magazine. It is only considered a rebuild kit there are no laws against high capacity rebuild kits in Cali. Once again I cannot speak for other restrictive states.

If possession is legal in the state in which the shipper resides, the shipper has no problem at all. Any problem is for the recipient insofar as his own state laws about possession.
