Hi All
I am thinking about picking up a Springfield XD pistol. If I were to get a 40 S&W model are there any issues that I need to be aware of? Will it fire cast lead bullets or do you have to stick to Jacketed ammo with them? I want to be able to reload for it so case bulge and bening able to shot lead are my worries.

Maybe just get a 45 version? Or both.

Barrel is rifled. Lead is fine. They won't run anything with a (sharp lip) SWC profile. In .40sw that's not as much an issue as .45acp.

Great guns. Mine were excellent. Nice grip, pointed well, reliable.

The only 9mm pistol I have is my Springfield XD. I really like that it is 100% reliable with the inexpensive ammo I buy (Federal from Walmart and CCI Blazer aluminum from Natchez Shooters Supplies). Also it fits my hands well. The factory sights are "six o'clock hold" on the XD. I shoot a little high (2 inches) at 10 yards on a paper target with my XD 9 Service Model 4", because I am used to "center of mass hold". I'm not a reloader, so I'm not able to answer your questions about lead reloads, sorry!

I load Cast Lee 175gr SWC for my XDm 4.5 in 40 cal. Never had any feeding problems in several hundred rounds. I don't load hot for paper punching and never had any problems with case bulging. No case bulging on any of the factory loads that I have shot either. Waiting for my XS big dot sights to arrive so I can't really say where the poi and poa will be until later in the week.

I usually shoot lead SWC in my XD 40 Tactical with no problems at all.

IMHO: The XDS simply emasculates the entire premise of the XD. What's "extreme" about a limited capacity 45? It's like having a 4-shot revolver: silly. Slim and silly in this case. I've never had any difficulty concealing my full-sized XD's.

I own 3 XD pistols and one XDM. Never had a failure of any type in the years since I bought my first one. These thing caused me to oil up the 1911s and put them on the top shelf of the safe.

I own 2 XD45's - no problems at all. Love those XD's!

I've run a couple thousand 200 gr SWC through my 4.5" XDM 45. It's a little pickey about seating depth, if the bullet was out to far in would jam into the rifling. At the extreme it would cause it to fail to return to battery, or it may just be hard to eject a unfired round.

Once I worked out the seating depth, it runs great.

PS, part of the problem with seating depth was trying to find something to work in both my gun and my dad's 1911 so we could share ammo. His gun wont feed short bullets, and my gun doesn't like long bullets.

I own quite a few XDs, These are just about my favorite handguns. My XD40 doesn't like SWCs so I just don't load them, I stick round nose or flat nose and they shoot fine.

I have an XD40SC that I love to shoot. The only issue I have had with it, is that it can go through my reloads way too fast. :D

I own an XD in 9mm and I work in armed security.I reload for it and that was one of the main reasons that I purchased it instead of a Glock (that and the fact that I just flat out think that it's a better weapon)I have run every reload possible in it without failure.I also know friends who own it in .40 S&W with the same good results.

If I was going to get a 40 S&W, I would get the XDm 5.25 Comp model. Great gun, but a little big if you want it for carry.

I have the XD 45 tactical, and have done some customizations to it, it came from Springfield with a 6.5 lb trigger and now with the help of the Springer Precision trigger kit it breaks around 3.5 lb, I also extended the capacity of the mags with Arrodendo extension that brought the 13 round mags to a capacity of 16 round, I do reload and found that it will not cycle the wad cutter but will cycle the flat nose cowboy rounds, lead is alright to use it's not an octagonal barrel like the Glocks, the grips are very slim and angle points naturally, a real SHTF fire arm, no regrets, they do make the XDm which has an adjustable back strap, different grip serrations and they do cycle wad cutters, for about $125.00 more than the XD tactical, and will probably cost you a $100.00 for the trigger kit to lower the trigger resistance as-well, good luck with your decision.

I've had zero issues with my XD-40. I've had it for about 6 years, and I just bought another, the XD-40sc.

XDsc9mm is my primary carry gun. It's fantastic. It shoots well, but does not like steel cased ammo. It eats everything. I don't want to start a war, but I did trade my G23 in because i prefer the features of an XD.

XD and XDM pistols are real crowd pleasers. I've yet to encounter an owner that disliked them and they're a hit at the range too.

XD's are great pistols. I've had the XD40 subcompact and it was flawless with any ammo I used in it. You'll be happy with your purchase.
