I just recieved an 1896/11 Swiss. I load for a K-31. Anyone tell me the significant differences?

You may find the chamber dimensions are a bit different. For my K31, I have a Redding FL die set, which as far as I know is cut to maximize brass life. Dies cut using smaller dims sizing the brass, overworks it, and adds a lot of effort on sizing. Shooting this over-sized ammo is however no problem with regard to safety.

Thanks for the reply. Guess what I am really asking is if you need to dial down the loads for the 1896/11? I hear the claims that they need lower pressure loads than the K-31

They both tend to work best with something very close to GP-11 loads. You don't want to use amped-up handloads in the 1911, but for that matter you really shouldn't in the K31 either. That straight pull is not ideal for yanking out stuck brass. These are finely-tuned machines built around pretty much one loading of one cartridge.

There is a slight variation in the chambers I believe. But I can't remember now which die set is set for which platform. IIRC the LEE was set for the 1911. Check out the collector's forum site on this. I'm sure there are threads on it.

All the die sets are for the tighter '11 chamber unless they specifically state K31. Redding had the originals for that specific gun and Hornady now offers a separate set as well.

GP-11 is about 46KCUP. Both 11 and 31 types will handle 308 pressures. The 31 types will handle magnum pressures. More pressure equals less bore/barrel life. What you wants? If you already have a 31 specific die, you'll need to buy the plain jane 1911 die now for the 11 type.Best

If yours is anything like mine, the chamber is going to be considerbly deeper than on most K-31s. I have 3 sets of dies, C.H. Tool & Die, RCBS and Redding. Brass resized in the Redding will not work in any of my 1911's. If you compare the two after firing, the shoulder is more rounded in brass formed for the 1911. As far as neck sizing for either rifle, save your money. The most I've been able to neck size a 7.5X55 cartridge is once or twice and then it can be difficult getting the brass extracted from the chamber. Not sure if RCBS has updated their dies or come up with a new set, but the older S/R die set is number 17101.
