Does anyone have data for a 40 grain v-max/z-max or comparable using W-748? Thank you.

The Hornady reloading manual does I think. I'll check.
No, they don't.
Hodgdon?
No, they don't either.
O.K. Lyman #49 has it then?
Nope!
Hmmmm?
Maybe W-748 isn't a good powder for a 40 grain bullet.
Or maybe a 40 grain bullet isn't a good bullet for the .223?
So many questions, so few answers.

Just trying to see what people have tried. I have searched and found people having good results from 26-29 grains. Only reason I am lookiing for this combo is that I have stopped reloading for 5.7 and have a few thousand 40 grain z-max projectiles and a ton of w-748. Thanks anyway for looking.

Well, Lyman #49 shows W-748 with a 45 grain Sierra.
27.0 is Start.
30.0 is MAX.
Pressure is only 47,600 PSI.
You could try that with a 40 I think.

Try the 26.0gr of 748 they list for a 50gr bullet. I bet it will work fine for you.
40gr bullets are the cat's meow in my 14" Contender barrel.

Ok looking into my old manuals in the hornady vol#1 it states for a 45gr hornet as follows
#2230 Hornet
ballistic coefficent-.202
col-2.200
sectonal density-.128
diam-.224
Win748
3100 3200 3300 3400 3500------fps
25.5 26.5 27.5 28.6 ----
It reads
In our test rifle, the best accuracy and uniformity throughout the range of hornady bullets was obtaied with W748 and IMR4198 note; when using a 223 with rapid twist barrels (As in the ruger ini-14 or Colts AR-15A2) DO NOT USE SX bullets. The rapid twist can cause these fragile bullets to come apart in flight, especially at maxmium velocities. However, the 68gr BTHP Match bullet requires a fast twist to fully stabilize it in flight. A 1 in 10'' twist or faster is required. The 68 gr data was fired in a Colt AR-15A2 with a 1 in 7'' twist rate and a 20'' barrel. Also, some manufactures of semiautomatic firearms recomend the use of a crimped bullet to reduce the chance of the cycling of the action pushing a bullet deeper into the case and accordingly increasing pressures.

With 40 grainers and W748, work your way up to 28.0 grains in .2 or .3 grain increments. 28 grains has been a pretty consistent performer with OAL adjustments to fine tune it.

I use to run 27.0gr of W748 with CCI 450 SR Magnum primers, 40gr VMax, 2.200". These ran 3177 fps out of my 16" M&P.
By way of comparison, Fiochhi 40gr VMax factory ammo ran 3353fps out of the same rifle.
