I'm looking at a 5906 in excellent condition and just wanted some opinions.
Seems like a nice gun, not scratched up, clean and the grips look good.
Comes with a leather holster, 8 mags, 150 rounds of ammo and the box for $450

If it comes with all those extras and the gun is mint, it sounds like a fair price. They are excellant shooters of which I still have one. Used to carry it at work. By today's standards just a little heavy for its caliber.

That is a good deal. I absolutely LOVE this gun. Its super-light recoil with that big stainless frame. I would order a recoil spring from Brownells and replace that and call it good to go. They are excellent guns. The double-action trigger pull is very smooth and exhibits virtually no stacking along its travel, a fairly consistent 11#'s. The single action trigger is clean and crisp at 3#.

I paid $450 for a TSW model without any extra's just a few months ago. The TSW is a little harder to find. I think its a fair price and its a great gun.

Great range gun. Very pleasant to shoot and they typically run like a Swiss watch. Mine has eaten everything I've fed it without a hitch. If you don't want all the mags and holster, you can usually score good specimens with a single mag in the 300-350 range.

I'd echo the sentiments of others here. If it is in pristine shape and has 8 extra magazines, I'd jump on it. The 5906 is a rock solid service pistol if ever there was one.

I have two, one NIB and one that has seen lots of use but been given lots of good care. Looks darn near new.

Saving the NIB one for my son, so that when he asks about the "good old days" when all semi-auto pistols were made of steel, I can give it to him.

The 5906 is one of the best 9mm handguns ever produced, and almost certainly the toughest. If I could only keep one 9mm, it'd be my 5906 (over Berettas, Tanfoglios, Kahrs and everything else)

Fairly beat up police trade-ins with one mag will cost you $330 plus shipping and transfer. Used OE mags are about $25/ea, and the holster and ammo have a little value as well. You're basically paying ~$250 for the gun. BUY IT!

I think the 3rd generation Smith semi-auto's are quality handguns; with the additional magazines, and other extras the price sounds good to me-

As long as it is decent shape i would hop on it the 5906 was my first centerfire pistol and i still kick my self for getting rid of it!

My wife bought me an unfired 1989 5906 for Christmas. Its is a fantastic shooter. Very accurate and very low recoil. I liked enough that I bought a 3913 as my EDC. I plan on getting a 4566 or a 4516 for winter carry.

I was issued on brand new 5906 as a duty weapon. It was a fine gun for that. They are well made and very reliable. When we swapped to Glocks, I bought it and 3 mags for $180 bucks. I sold it a short time later and don't miss it a bit, though.

I don't have the 5906 but I do have the 6906. It belongs to my father but I do get to shoot it here and there and outright love it. Recoil is easy to manage and it is very accurate. Fella at the range shot it and proceeded to put 10 rounds into the 10 ring. Very happy about that.

I would personally buy it since it comes with all that. If you want to try cheaper, Go for it if not, I would still get it based on the 6906.

OEM mags go for around $33 a piece new. Aftermarket Mec Gar (the best aftermarket) mags go for around $20 to $25 new. OEM replacement grips are $20. 5906s are going all over for $300 to $375 depending on condition and supplier. So you do the math...but it sounds like a decent deal, especially if they're OEM mags.

Do a search on 5906s. Lots of info out there. Basically it will tell you that these things are overbuilt, over engineered, eats any ammo, including empty cases, will last forever or close to, has good combat accuracy, and extremely reliable BUT HEAVY!

BUT HEAVY!

Funny thing is, they're actually pretty dang close to other guns in the same class, like the Beretta 92FS, Sig P226, CZ-75 and Browning Hi-Power.

Google results, empty w/mag:

Beretta 92FS: 34 ounces
Sig P226: 34 ounces
Browning Hi-Power: 35 ounces
S&W 5906: 38 ounces
CZ-75: 39 ounces

My results, no mags:

Beretta 92FS: 30.5 ounces
S&W 5906: 33.2 Ounces
Baby Eagle FS 9mm: 36.0 ounces
Colt 1911 .45 (just because): 35.1 ounces

Mine was a police trade in and works well.

I'd suggest you buy it.

The price sounds about right because of the extra's that are offered.

Thanks for the input
I think I'll offer him $400 and see if he takes it.
I mean I'd probably go $450, but if I can shave him down a bit, I will :D
It seems to shoot pretty nice
The trigger's a little different from what I'm used to shooting, (XD, Glock, etc) but I think once I get used to it it'll shoot good groups

I heard exactly the opposite; that the CDNN guns were beat up and generally needed new grips. Just what I heard, never bought one from CDNN, just what I read on the S&W forum.

@ tuj

Look at the picture of my 5906 5 posts up.

It came from CDNN.

I don't think it looks all beat up.

And I've done nothing to it other than give it a good cleaning.

Shoots spot on.

Mags are around $33/ea. * 8 is $264 in mags alone; assuming all white followers, functioning well, etc.

Round or square trigger guard? Either way, I'd say $450 is a good buy. Ah, I see above round...

Nice! I like the black trigger and hammer which are different than mine.

Not to show off my ignorance, but what's the significance of the white follower?
I've only got the one mag so far, I was just trying it out, but I gave his GF a check today so I'll get the rest tomorrow or the next day.
The one mag I have right now has an orange follower and says something about law enforcement on it.

White followers on 59XX? All mine are orange...

The 40XX mags had blue, white, & yellow followers based on pre-band, LE hi cap, & post ban - don't ask me which was which though. I think the white followers had a slightly different shape.

The 659/5906 are my favorite 9mm pistols. I also have a 3906 which is outstanding. I love all of the second and third generation pistols that Smith makes. I have a 645 and a 457, both .45s.

My 9mms (except the 3906) have adjustable sights and the grips fit my hand just fine on all of them. They're the most underrated autos out there in my view.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh198/jriler/SW5906659.jpg

The 5906 (top) is third generation and the 659 is the second
generation pistol. Both are outstanding. The 5906 has better ergo-
nomics (supposedly), but both are drop dead reliable.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh198/jriler/SW3906_1.jpg

The 3906 definitely feels better in the hand, but I'd rather have
the extra rounds. The stainless autos are just superb.

Love m 5906, it's me SHTF handgun. That's a good deal with 8 factory magazines, around here used mags tend to run about $25.00 each for them and the guns $400.00.

Rest assured, it will.

My 1006 was followed shortly by a 4506, then 4006, then 5906, then 4516-1, then CS-45. Still on the prowl for others.

I have a 5903 which is the aluminum frame version of the 5906 and it's a fantastic pistol. It saves a few ounces over the all steel version and makes a great truck gun. It's too big for me to carry but the little 908 serves that roll well.

The only problem I have with these autos is that I can't shoot them nearly as well as I can my Ruger Security-Six. In other words, I need to practice with them as shooting autos is completely different than shooting revolvers.

This was my best target of the 3 I shot

My worst group was about 1 3/4 inches, but nobody wants to see the worst targets:barf:

It's an easy gun to shoot, like others have said, the recoil is almost nonexistent.
The sights seem to be right on and the only variance seems to be me
A good shooter could take this pistol and put them all in the same hole I think.
2 thumbs up for the 5906:)

You will want more 3rd generations...I tend to like them :)

Top left is my transitional 645 (a 4506 that is stamped 645...before they switched to the 4506 stamp at the factory)

Below it is it's little brother...4516.

To the right is my 5906 and the little brother 6906

The 5906 and 659 not only are great guns to shoot, they're also great TV guns. I see them used in shows ranging from the X-Files to 24 to The Mentalist. It's funny to see them in continuity errors on The Mentalist, where they pop up in scenes where they shouldn't be. Many of these shows just assume that viewers don't know anything about guns, so when they show up in scenes where they shouldn't be, and vice versa, it's funny. Also, it's amusing to see them pop up in subsequent shows being used by bad guys. The bottom line is that they're highly visible and they look cool -- so that's why shows use them.
