I recently sent in paperwork to the ATF for a tax stamp for a sound suppressor. Does anyone know of the current wait times? How long have you had to wait for your NFA paperwork to get approved?

I've read elsewhere that the wait time has gone way up this year. I haven't done so in recent memory, but that's the word I'm seeing.

Oh, yah, what can did you pickup? :D

According to NFATracker.com's Report Page (http://nfatracker.com/reports.aspx), the wait times from Form Sent to Stamp Received are averaging around 175 days or so.

I'm pretty close to that 170 mark myself. I'm trying to be patient.

If you don't have your info up on NFATracker I'd suggest you at least consider it. The more people with info there, the more accurate it will be.

The wait time for the can I bought last year was relatively short compared to what everyone here is posting. I wrote the check on May 19th, mailed it on the 20th, they cashed it on May 24th.

I picked up my suppressor the very day that the dealer received my stamp in that day's mail; Tuesday, September 27th.

The time between the cashed check and my stamp arrival was 126 days. That's 4 months & 2 or 3 days, and there were at least 3 federal holidays within that time span; Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day.

So I call it an even four months.

I can only hope that the suppressor I buy here in the next month or so will go as fast.

Good luck with that hope, just prepare yourself for disappointment, because a 5-6 month wait time is the current reality.

That was last year, one I sent in Jan came back in April, things started backing up bad in June/July/August, My suppressor from August 2011 just came back a few weeks ago, I was hoping for maybe Xmas based on my previous experience, not even close. Its 6 months+ if you send it in now!

Yep, if I get the stamp back by Christmas, I'll feel satisfied.
...things started backing up bad in June/July/August...
I've noticed this, and I feel lucky that my last one was what it was.

But back to your quote; this was the very time period (June/July 2011) when the NFA branch rearranged their examiners to an assignment by state -> http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=598901

It obviously did not help us in any way.

Then again, we might start to see a trend -statewise- in the speed these examiners are able to do their work. NFAtracker.com has been able to show that certain examiners do their work much quicker than others, and everyone on the web began to hope that their F4 was put on such'n'such's desk, because that examiner was quickest.

Those reports showed that the slowest examiner averaged more than a month & a half longer duration than the quickest. That's a drastic difference; it would mean that I might get my suppressor at the first of November rather than by Christmas.

I doubt NFAtracker.com reset their data last summer to get a baseline for the new assignment-by-state system, but if they would have begun sorting their reports by the end user's state, it might begin to show that living in a particular state will give you an advantage or disadvantage for the approval.

I believe Sandra Snook was my examiner last year. She used to be one of the slower ones, but with the new by-state assignment, she's one of the quicker ones now. Of course, she only reviews forms from three states while another examiner, Bill Shipman, is in charge of nine states. Three times as many, but regardless, he's still quicker than she is.

According to the site's reports; http://nfatracker.com/reports.aspx

It's been a while, but the last time I had a purchase involved with a F3, it took less than 8 weeks from the first day that the seller called my dealer, to the day my dealer called me that the item arrived.

I'm less knowledgeable about the F3 process though. Does the same group of NFA examiners process those forms?

My first stamp went pending 9/19/2011 and was approved 2/29/2012. I have three more pending, all in January of this year 1/09/2012 for one and 1/24/2012 for the other two. I figure I should get approvals in July of this year sometime if the current trend continues.

Filing with a trust, mailed Nov.16 and received the call today to pick up my suppressor. And as messed up as it may sound, also received some paperwork for my SBR. It wasn't what I was expecting. Same trust for both, but the SBR needs me to fill out the beneficiary "schedule B".

but the SBR needs me to fill out the beneficiary "schedule B"

Never heard of "schedule B", hope its not a new way to hassle us.

One examiner had a problem with some of the wording in my Trust, which had already been approved by two other examiners. The good news is once I had the Trust re-drawn to make him happy I got the two stamps in a week door to door.

I received two items that took 6 months back in February. It seems that 6 months has become the norm. Three years ago it was 3 months.

At least for my inspector at the time.

I don't think the change instituted in July 2011 has worked out as planned. Or has it??

For what it is worth I submitted a Form 20 earlier this month. It took all of 8 days to get approved.

Wally, "schedule B" is the schedule of beneficiaries. Your trust should have one, it designates who gets your NFA items should you die. I didn't have anyone I cared to put on it, so N/A was used. Now I have my wife on it even though she is also a trustee.

I talked to my dealer this week. They heard that the ATF is adding some manpower to help deal with the volume. Supposedly some sort of assistant examiner, but not more examiners. No telling if it will help.

Has anyone else heard this?

Tell me about it....I paid full price for a YHM Phantom Ti 7.62 on February 11. The can has not been built yet, and when I called YHM yesterday they informed me that they are currently filling orders placed in January, so mine should be built sometime next month. Then it will probably take another 10-12 weeks for the Form 3 to clear, which puts in my dealers hand sometime in August. Then the Form 4 gets submitted, and I wait another 6-7 months, which means I may not have the can in hand until March 2013. That's 14 months from the time of payment.

The good news....I will have a YHM Phantom 7.62 Ti by March 2013 :D

Smart money says you'll be grinning from ear to ear by the second shot. Bring plenty of ammo!

To get more out of my Osprey 45, I got an extra 9mm 1/2x28 piston and a Lone Wolf threaded barrel for my Glock 17L -- maybe not "optimum" but still plenty quiet enough to shoot without earpro using 147gr FMJ ammo.

Ive had farts louder than this 45 going off! Im still smiling from the experience! I put a 100 rounds through it, and im happy I only brought 100 with me, because I probably would dumped my whole stash through it! Awesome.
