I read threads on Winchester 540 and HS-6 and would like to locate a source of still existing 540 for my pet pheasant load. Thanks

The W540 is now the WSF. I like you have used 540 in 20ga loads for decades. I ran out of a 8lb keg 5 yrs ago and started going through all of Win load books. All of the data matches to the tee, the only thing changed was the what they call it now.

If you can't fine WSF in your area you can always use HS-6 since W540 and HS-6 are reported by Hodgdon to be the same powder. I didn't know about WSF, thanks for that information...

540 IS NOT Winchester Super Field!!!!

540 is the same as Hodgdon's HS-6. WSF is faster than HS-6.

I called hodgon for win 540 data for 9mm when I was given a lb that was 20 years old. They told me HS6 is the exact same thing. Just buy some!

When I get back in town next week I will post WW reload books showing the exact same loads with WSF as 540. Win renamed most of their powders starting in the early late 80's early 90's. WSF is now the std shotgun powder for 20ga.

mmackay since you have the old manuals with 540 data go to hodgons site and pullup the 20 ga data. Look at the charges listed and and compare to 540. I did this with 3-4 publications and the WSF data is the same.

Yeah, WW-540 and HS-6 are the same powder. Blue-ford, as to the data matching up on a few loads for WSF, just because the grain weights are the same does NOT mean they're the same powder!:what:

Since Hodgdon is now the distributor for the winchester and IMR line of powder, they've stopped selling some powders and consolidated others. W-540 and W-571 have been cancelled, and only HS-6 is still sold. HS-7 was the same as W-571.

Of course you know that Hodgdon has never MADE powder,,,---right? They simply renamed powder, packaged it and distributed it to us reloaders.
