I'm looking for a new club or public range within 1 hr of the Naperville Illinois area. Or if anyone knows of public land that it's legal to shoot on in Northern Illinois that would be even better. I'm currently a member of the Aurora Sportsmans Club but that may be changing due to personal reasons.

The ISRA range near Kankakee may be your best bet.

The new range in Lombard allows rifles but is at 25yds max.

Here's a link for shooting ranges:

Upstate is pretty bad for rifles. Once you get downstate it gets a lot better.
Good luck!

Larry beat me to it, I was going to recomend the ISRA Kankakee range, too. That's the only one I remember anywhere in the area from when I used to live in IL.

Buffalo Range is pretty nice, but closed now since someone shot over the berm and hit some buildings

Try the Aurora Sportsman's Club, it is out in Waterman, IL. The website is:

Haven't belonged there in years, before they moved from Sugar Grove. Kind of pricey, but not a lot of alternatives that close.

These don't meet the 1 hour criteria, but if you travel east to the land of the free, there are a lot of public ranges in Indiana. Might be one at Willow Slough, which would be close to the one hour thing. Dunno.

Check the Indiana DNR website. There also might be something in southern Wisconsin,

My S-I-L lives five houses down the road and has a 200 yard range in his back yard so I never use public stuff. I get spoiled.

Just remember that Illinois residents can't bring a handgun into Indiana w/o a CCW permit IIRC.

One of the DNR ranges had a sign saying this.
