THRers,

My son asked me what guns JM Browning designed. I started to list them, then told him I’d have to get back to him. If you’re 100% sure of your answer (and preferably cite references) please feel free to comment (I am befuddled by the list thus far as it is.) Thus far I have:

Single Shot Rifle – Evolved into the High and Low Wall as produced by Browning & Winchester.
Winchester Rifles- ’86, ’92, 94 & ’95
Winchester Shotguns- ’87 & ’97
Machineguns- 1895 Peacemaker (AKA Potato digger,) 1917 & 1919 (.30-06) and M2HB (.50)
Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR)
Baby .25
FN Model 1900 or 1903 (Which was it ’00 or ’03 or both? .32- but was it also made in .25 & .380?)
A-5
1911
High Power P-35 (finished & altered considerably by someone else after Mr. Browning’s death.)

Questions I have:

Are there any corrections to this list?

Are there any additions to this list? I.E. what about the:

Ithaca Model 37? (& subsequently the newer BPS?)
Superposed?
A Winchester manufactured .22 pump? (I don’t know which one.)
What about the Browning Semi-Auto .22?

JMB- What a mind!

TIA

X

Is the Colt Woodsman a JMB design?

Oh, my.
'93 Winchester pump, predecessor to the '97.
The 1890-'06-62 .22 Winchester pump rifles.
A bunch of little .22 bolt actions in addition to the Thumb Trigger.

1900, 1902, 1903 Colt .38 ACPs, 1905 .45
Colt Woodsman .22

The Ithaca 37 is a derivative of the Remington 17 which was the original Browning bottom ejector. The current BPS is related.
The FN/Browning .22 auto is a derivative of the Remington 24 which was the original Browning bottom ejector.

There is an FN "Trombone" pump .22 rifle, but I don't know if it is a JMB design

A Stevens pump shotgun, I forget the model number.

And those are just some more of the ones that made it into production.
Winchester bought up many more Browing designs than they could ever manufacture, to keep the competition from getting them. Some are mentioned in his biography, John Moses Browning, American Gunmaker. (Which Amazon seems not to know about.)

Gordon said "1927 &1928 Machineguns" Didn't John Thompson design the Tommy Gun?

Look up JMB's biography. Book is called "John M. Browning, American Gunmaker" and it was written by John Browning, Curt Gentry and Col. W.R. Betz. Great book about his life and his guns that he designed. A must have in my opinion. The previous replies hit only a few of his guns. A truly phenomenal inventor.

Old thread, but I thought I'd point people to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Browning as a pretty good source. I've been keeping an eye on the article there to ensure that no junk gets in there. It's a pretty authoritative list.
