someone really dislikes the left-handed!
I see the idea, but I don't see the need, and a curved mag just adds engineering/reliability concerns.

The chances are 50% that the grip will be curved in the wrong direction for a given situation, unless you also come up with a way to adjust it. Now there would be an engineering challenge! :neener:

and a curved mag just adds engineering/reliability concerns.
All my Thompson, PPsH41, and Ak47 drum magazines are 100% reliable. Some are over 70 years old, maybe those old engineers were smarter? A mild curve as shown wouldn't even be worth worrying about, but would help immensely in hiding the butt of the pistol for concealed carry.

You really randomly select which hip you're going to carry your pistol on????
Looks like a great idea if you're scrawny like me and feel the need to concealed carry a full size pistol.
The amount of whining about the grip curve would be hilarious, given the massive whining now by many people as to how they can't handle the difference in grip angle between a 1911 and a Glock!

Put down the Vodka and step away from the pistol.

Seems like you'd have to curve it on a perfect radius otherwise you couldn't insert the mag.

Would go great with my Aggie carry revolver.....

I like it but maybe a three position hinge at the grip/frame juncture would keep the south paws happy too.

Make the frame out of the snot green flexible plastic Hornady uses on the Zombie-Max ammo tips.
Then it will flex to fit everyone.

All my Thompson, PPsH41, and Ak47 drum magazines are 100% reliable.those still latch into a straight magwell.
I was thinking about mag latch and reliable drop-free design more than feeding through a sideways-curved magazine.

As long as the curve of the magwell is constant radius, and the magazine and magwell curves share a common center "pivot" point, magazines should be able to drop free with that amount of curve.
However, carying extra mags in a belt pouch with that curve will have the heel of them digging into your ribs all day long.

Curving time and space seem to be more practical.

Yeah, those rotary magazines on Ruger 10/22's (been around since 1964) will never work.
bigfatdave
April 22, 2012, 07:32 PM
so you would put a rotary magazine in there?
45_auto
April 22, 2012, 08:49 PM
Feeding along the curved side of a pistol magazine would be no different than feeding around a rotary magazine - the rotary magazine in a 10/22 would have presented a much larger design problem since the radius is MUCH smaller, and you're feeding a rimmed cartridge.
In other words, a curved pistol magazine with a large constant curvature would be trivial.

In other words, those 10/22 magazines you describe have a sprocket inside guiding the rounds around in a circle, not rounds being pushed in a column by a spring-loaded follower.
And while the spring-loaded follower might be able to travel in a curve, the magazine will still seat oddly and will be less able to drop free. Reloads will be awkward to carry, magazines will be more expensive due to R&D costs and oddity, the gun would be more expensive for the same reasons, offering dubious benefits. (I'm all for annoying the left-handed, but otherwise, what's the big benefit?)

Just make it a revolver.
bigfatdave
April 22, 2012, 09:30 PM
Actually, that's not a bad idea. Why not eliminate all the magazine issues by just using a wheelgun with an oddly-shaped frame?

I think the OP was kidding, at least I really, really hope so. But, you know somebody out there is going to be looking for one, and hoping to be first one to post a You Tube review.

Now if you could just design one with the barrel curved slightly to the right. That would really help my tendency to hit left.

The idea is not completely stupid.
But wouldŽnt one rather shorten the mag ( i.e 2 rounds)
and file the inner and outer side of the grip to
achieve this?
Should be possible with the curved mag too.
At what price though ... i dunno :scrutiny:

However, carying extra mags in a belt pouch with that curve will have the heel of them digging into your ribs all day long.
No. You would just need to get a mag pouch that would carry them sideways, ie. parallel to the ground. It would wrap around the waist quite nicely, i'd guess.
Interesting idea, but I do hope it's a joke. Just becaus something can be done, doesn't mean it should be done!
