For the beginner or the expert, good for so much. Generally available from 22 LR to 357 Magnum a medium frame DA revolver with a 4" tube is small enough to pack but big enough to get a variety of jobs done. I have more large frame revolvers than middle sized ones but I appreciate them all. Here are a couple of mine.

Nice revolvers. 4" is the perfect compromise for carry, accuracy.

Who doesn't like 4" medium-framed revolvers. They're the perfect size for some carry, woods and general use without being overwhelming. Plus, a 4" barrel is plenty long enough for accuracy at the range, even out to 50-yds.

The 4-inchers are the perfect size for travel or nearly anything. They pack power and are great for pointability. And they're almost perfect for the .357 round. I think S&W and Ruger made horrible mistakes by phasing out their medium framed revolvers for their "hulksters" -- my term for the larger 686 and GP-100 sized guns. These companies continue to call their hulksters "medium-framed" handguns, but the 6-shot guns are borderline unsuitable for carrying on the trail or in camping. (After all, which would you rather have as a camping pistol, a S&W 13/65 or a 686?)

For all around versatility it's hard to beat the 4" medium frame revolver, be it a Colt, Ruger, S&W, or Dan Wesson. My all-time favorite is probably the S&W K frame though I still have a great fondness for the Ruger Security/Service/Speed Six series.

The only D/A revolver I have is a {GASP!} RG .38Spl snubby. It looks sorta like a Mdl 10 knock-off.

Now, I DO have a 4-1/2" (or so) 50th Year Single-Six, a 4-5/8" 50th Year .357 Blackhawk, and a 3-3/4" Sheriff's Model Glossy Stainless Vaquero. Gotta get my digi-cam going and take a few pix...

The 4-inch medium revolver is what pops into my brain when I hear the word, "gun". It is the archetype for me. Sadly, at my local range all I ever see are snub .38s and black semiautos. The service-size revolvers are getting less and less popular it seems.

I bought those same grips in Coco Bolo with a little different wood graining-but, in the pictures of these grips the lighter areas looked to be yellow-but, turned out to be lighter tan instead! This was disappointing.

I thought that GP100 at the LGS felt a little big in my hands. So, if the 686 and GP100 are no longer true "medium frame" revolvers, the Six Serries and Python are no longer made, what are the current production options available to shooters?

There are few things as good as the 4" service revolver. I regret, deeply, that I do not have one right now. There is a part of me that would trade, even, my Blackhawk in .45 colt for a nice enough Model 10 or Model 13.
