I've wanted one of these for awhile, so I was quite pleased when a pair of used, 3" model 36s turned up in a local shop. Each looked to be in great shape and sported rubber grips: Uncle Mike's on one and Pachmayr on the other. The shop let me shoot both before choosing which one I wanted and I found both shot POA/POI at ten yards with 158 gr. loads. I went with the one that had the Pachmayr grips on it. I've since replaced the Pachmayr's(though they are quite comfortable) with a set of slightly modified Herrett Shooting Stars. I'm a happy camper:)

I am a big fan of the 3" heavy barrel 36-1 myself. Heavy enough, and with enough sight radius, to be fun to shoot; light enough and small enough for EDC. The 3" tube does good things for the old FBI load (in this case Remington's, below) IMHO:

Nice M 36's you guys!

The 3 inch models are such fine revolvers, that extra 1 1/8th inch really sets them off and does wonders for the ballistics and sight radius. gb6491, ya should've bought the other one for a matched set! Heck it's not that hard to spend your money....LOL.....:)

I like your Herrett Shooting Stars. I pud a pair on my first center fire handgun a Ruger Secuiry 6 back in '75. They wouldn't allow for use of HKS speed loaders but where nice grips. Sold that gun many years ago though.

Here is a picture of a 3" 35 I picked up at a Police auction years aco. Replaced the pach compac's with the Gripper type show. They are a good hand filling grip that gives the gun a natural point for me.

here are the two S&W 60,s i got in the mid 80,s for my sons (three inch heavy barrels and square butts). the think they were a special run, i had them ingraved. eastbank.

I like 3" revolvers but I don't own one since I like pocket carry and they are just a little too big for that. If I were to belt carry I think a 3" barrel is best...

I used to carry this 3 inch model 37 Air-weight around as a coat pocket shooter.
It really liked the old blue Federal NyClad loads.

I've got three Model 60s and all have Herrett "Shooting Ace" grips, my favorite grip configuration for J-frame revolvers.

Some years ago before I obtained my CCW, I dropped into a local gun store to look at what was on the shelves. I ended up buying a stainless 3" J Magnum with a full lug and adjustable rear sight. Grips are like the ones on the 5" model shown in a prior post.

I soon found that obtaining a proper holster involved more than looking at the rack at Cabelas. For that reason, and for the reason that my CCW instructor characterized an exposed hammer as a "hook" designed to snag on garments, the revolver was assigned to bedroom and RV duty. I bought a Model 642 for carry, and later supplemented it with a couple of semiautos.

By that time I had learned to order good holsters that fit the gun and that can be reholstered one handed--and good belts.

Today, I decided to acquire the facility to carry the Model 60 should the need arise. The Milt Sparks VM-2 is my favorite semi-auto holster, and I have a Com-Tac for an M&P 9c, but I decided to look around a bit.

I came upon an outfit called Bell Charter Oak in upstate NY. They make a model for the Model 60 3"; "Lefty", to whom I spoke, has one. I ordered one with a reinforced mouth.

Will report back in six to eight weeks.

My holster is a bell charter oak m&pIII ordered for a Taurus 445

I didn't like the way the larger framed Taurus fit in it but that 60 and the 905 I now carry fit in this holster like a hand in a glove. Ironically much better than the gun this holster was ordered for.

Yep, a 3" J-frame can do a bit of everything. Works well in the nightstand, at the range, in the woods, or concealed on your belt.

The sight picture of a 3" barrel is actually a 50% longer than a 2" barrel, and 60% longer than a 1 7/8" barrel.

I don't think you're accounting for the actual sight radius and are just quoting the barrel length difference.
