Hey everyone, I just got American Rifleman in the mail and while I went thru the whole thing, I noticed all the way in the back pages that Hornady has a recall on some of their ammo. I thought it was just bullets for reloading but it say's it is pistol ammunition.
This is for the 500 S&W 300 Gr FTX ammo.
7 lots are being recalled. The lot numbers are,
*3101327
*3110256
*3110683
*3110695
*3110945
*3111388
*3111885
These lot numbers may exhibit excessive chamber pressures.
Call 800-338-1242 ( Hornady ) They will make arrangements to replace or return of the said lot numbers.
Guy's, Be careful and look up your boxes and see if you have it!
Sorry if this was posted, I did not see it and decided to post it.

I kind of got the idea that Hornady loads their 500 S&W ammo pretty hot. Had to load seven grains above book max to match the 350 grain ammo. Still didn't see any signs of pressure though.

That's surprising to me, since I've found most of their line to be light and under powered!

What kind of pressure equipment are you using to measure this?
Unfortunatley, one of the first pressure signs you will find in a revolver is the cylinder rupturing.

I used QuickLoad to predict the pressure and worked up slowly to what it suggested as the maximum safe load. While working up I checked for ease of extraction and any changes to the primer shape. With the maximum load I used, all five fired cases would fall out of the cylinder without even using the extractor.
As a side note the book max I was starting with was around 45,000 PSI while SAAMI Max is 60,000 PSI.

56hawk,
Good to know. As I said, sometimes the first indications of high pressure in revolvers is the last one also. Unlike rifles, pressure indicators in handguns is not a repeatable science. Good luck with your loads, they seem to work for you.
Another thing to remember is the manufacturers often use powder types not available to reloaders. They tend to buy in large lots and mix powders to bring them to a required burn rate and deliver ballistics that are consistant with what they produced in the past. They do not necessarily use the same powder year after year.
