That whole news blah-blah about Remington is mostly played-up propaganda, don't believe everything you hear. The people who had problems with the guns weren't handling them safely or weren't maintaining the guns properly. The 870 safety has worked fine for millions of people since 1950 and it's an amazing gun.

If you drop a Remington shotgun it is possible for it to fire. Same with almost any gun. Some just do it easier than others and Remington is one of the easier to make it happen. Wouldn't stop me from buying one.

If you want a budget repeating shotgun a Remington 870 Express is at the top of my list. Even with the QC problems they are having. The gun design is rock solid and even if it needs a little tweaking after purchase it is worth the trouble. Other acceptable chioces are the Benelli Nova, Browning BPS or Mossberg 500 in that order. I wouldn't want anything on your list.

It would be helpful to know your ''budget'' and intended use. Pumps are pretty cheap to buy and there's a gazillion out there to choose from.

Aside from maybe the Savage, your not looking at anything I would buy....Remington, Winchester, Ithaca and maybe Mossberg would be my choices.

Nothing wrong with Remingtons. Take a look at the shotgun in most law enforcement vehicles and odds are it will be a Remington. Yes there are other makers that produce shotguns for law enforcement but Remington has been there a very long time. They would not be if all this bad product hype were true. If you want an inexpensive shotgun you could choose the Remington 870 Express, Mossberg 500 series, or licensed copies. You may also try looking at estate and yard sales from time to time. I picked up my first Remington 870 Wingmaster at an estate sale. It may have been a little overpriced but I knew the man who owned it and that made all the difference to me. Remember that safety is the responsibility of the owner and the handler. The only reason Remington is in the crosshairs right now is that they are a successful company and some are envious of them. Also some of those Remingtons had to be worked on by unqualified tinkers. Don't alter a firearms trigger unless you know exactly what you are doing. If in doubt have a qualified gunsmith do the work. A few bucks for a job done properly will save you big bucks and maybe your life later on.

The alleged safety issue with Remington 870 Express shotguns is a media fantasy based on isolated incidents that rise to the level of statistical significance only because of the very high number of these guns sold to people who believed they had something to do with the older 870. In fact, the Express line is plagued with quality issues - but safety isn't one of them. Now, an 870 Wingmaster is a different kettle of fish and a fine gun to own. I had, and rapidly disposed of, an 870 Marine Express that was prone to rust and had frequent ejection problems. I do not own but have frequently shot Wingmasters and they are a whole different level of quality.

I own a 20ga H&R on a case colored SB1 receiver and stocked with Buffalo Classic furniture. It is a great little grouse gun. They also make a very fine slug gun in the Ultra Slug Hunter. But, generally speaking, a single shot shotgun is really a red haired stepchild.

Depends which Savage you are talking about. The Savage Milano (discontinued) is an O/U made by FAIR in Italy and is a great gun for the money. The Savage/Stevens 512 Goldwing is a festering turd that has been plagued by broken firing pins, broken top lever springs, atrocious barrel regulation and childish engraving. Some of the older Savage guns are nice. The Model 24 combo gun was a good idea but suffers from poor barrel regulation.

Not sure which of Armscore's imports you refer to. There have been a few keepers - I believe they imported Gamba for a while in the 80s.

Not knowing what your intended use is, I would generally recommend a good used Remington 1100 or 870 Wingmaster (not an Express), an older Ithaca M37, or (with some patience) a good older SKB O/U. All of these are tried and true designs that can be had for under $500. If you want NIB, take your budget up to @ $650 and get a Beretta 3901 s/a.

H&R Pardner Pump is a great choice.

Head on over to your local pawn shops. Look for a good deal. You ought to be able to pick up a used but serviceable Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or Ithaca 37 for under 200 bucks. Any of these ought to serve you well.

Go to Walmart, buy a Mossberg Maverick 88 in 12 guage. You'll be happy with it and you'll walk out of the store with a shotgun that costed $170 total.

I'll add my voice to the idea of looking for a nice old Ithaca 37. Pawn shops, little out of the way gun stores in the middle of nowhere & small gun shows are your friends for finding something high quality and reasonably priced.

While doing your research, I'll suggest looking into Winchester 12, Ithaca 37 &, of course, the 870. I greatly prefer the first two and see them used from $150 - $300 depending on condition on a regular basis.

Good luck!

I vote for Remington 870. An older used Wingmaster is within your budget.

Any of the above-mentioned US-made pumps will serve you well for your intended uses
