Specifically, on 'tactical' stuff like red dot sights? I ask because I am currently working in Beijing and I see a lot of "Eotechs" and "Aimpoinst" on vendors' tables. I am pretty sure these are 95% Chinese copies but some of them look and feel very close to the real thing. There's always the chance right?

Yes.
Optical sights are restricted under ITAR and other export controls.
But then I don't know if Aimpoint and Eotech are actually manufactured in the US to start with. So you might be looking at the real thing that did not pass through a US distributor... or you might be looking at Chicom copies.

No night or thermal vision units overseas without US State Department approval.

heck, you're not even allowed to let non-citizens look through NV on US soil

EOTechs are made in Michigan, by Michiganders.

Aimpoints are made in Sweden. In my mind, by the Swedish Bikini Team from the Old Milwaukee beer ads from the early 90's.
