I bought one of those new .410 gauge 870's,with the fake woodgrain stocks and matte finish, and it's not functioning well on 1st loading. It took three tries racking the pump to chamber the 1st round. Does this thing require break in or is it defective? Maybe just light lube?

My only previous experience with pumps is with well used ones.

One thing I really don't like is the loading of the thing. The follower is round bellied and much larger than the shell. It causes them to squirt to one side or another and not line up with the magazine tube.

Any tips appreciated.

Did you happen to clean it before taking it out for the first time? The magazine follower issue has me stumped though. Perhaps the follower is sitting on the spring correctly?

Read the manual, follow the procedures there. Sounds like the preservative hasn't been removed.

I'm sure it's the "goo-nasties". Like I said, never bought a new one before. I shall clean it thoroughly.

Yeah we have trouble with both the goonasties and the grease worms that get into all of our stuff and comsume the lubricants.

When you get it streightened out please give a report as I've been lusting after another .410 but am undecided on which pump to buy. Thanks in advance.

A true .410 receiver designed for the .410.

Most of today guns are built on the larger 20 ga receiver.

Mossberg came out with a scaled down 500 last year that is truly a .410 size too.

Model 42's are mighty pricy these days.
I stopped into a gun shop yesterday that had a 42 offered for sale.

The poor old thing was probably built in the 30's or 40's.
It showed a lot of wear ( bluing scuffed off of the barrel and
magazine tube from the forend). The buttstock has more scratches
than Texas has mesquite trees and it wore an aftermarket recoil pad.

On the plus side it was stamped Skeet and had a solid rib. The wood was
skeet style but I don't know enough to be sure it is original.

The asking price was a very alluring $1000.
I began thinking that I can easily shed my wifes disapproving tsk, tsk's.

I then noticed that the muzzle had a good deal of bluing wear and OMG...
a flush mounted threaded choke tube. Briley thin walls.

I thanked the salesman for showing it to me.

The .410 Mossbergs are pretty good (though if you want something like my creations the DFG Mk-1 or DFG Mk-2 it's a DIY job)

But with the right loads a .410 pumpgun from a major manufacturer will serve for Personal/Home Defense tasks rather well.
