Barrel break in on a 300 Win Mag should be interesting!

Enjoy the break in. Try to find a comfortable position and let it ride. Keep your wits on the site picture, your motion and a flinchless release and you will probably enjoy the session.

I do keep a coat near to fold and place in the stock socket of my shoulder if the session begins to wear on me.

Looking forward to the pics, and the first session review.

Magnums are typically only miserable to shoot from the bench. If I were buying a "beautiful and expensive rifle" in a belted magnum to take to Africa, it would probably be a .375H&H or .416Rigby.

Of course, if it were a "beautiful and expensive rifle" in .22LR, we'd have another set of folks asking why someone would spend so much on "just a .22". :rolleyes:

^That is my feeling exactly. If I were going to punish myself with recoil, I would get something bigger than a 300 Win. The 300 is really not much better than an -06 at anything except recoil and burning more powder.

Congrats Mark. Just bought a Cooper Model 21 for my wife in .223. Started the break in two days ago. It is a shooter and a beautiful gun too.

Never said anything about miserable... I don't mind the recoil on a .300 but I've never shot 50 rounds from a bench either. Why did I buy it? I have a rifle that I can hunt all over North America. In South Texas where I hunt a lot, we run across Nilgai a lot. Long shots on skittish animals with bulls weighing in around 400-500 pounds.

And because I've always wanted one and I closed a big deal and this was my present to myself.

But when you buy something nice, you treat it right, and that includes barrel break in.

Congrats on your new Cooper. I wouldnt get to hung up on the break in, the 6 Coopers I have shoot and clean up easily and I didnt do anything but shoot em and shoot em somemore.

I have moved to the .223, .243, .257 and .270 reduced recoil side of the road.

Got a helluva deal on a scope and it should be in within two weeks. I looked at about six of them that had almost the exact same wood and this one had a lot more character to it. I'll post a pic when I get back home.

I do remember the first time I picked up a Cooper. First thought was "this is what a rifle is supposed to feel like."

dubbleA--this is the most expensive rifle I've ever purchased so I'm going to play by the book on the break in... Not to mention, I'm actually looking forward to the range time--just not the cleaning and cleaning and cleaning.

13hrs from first post and hes supposed to be on a plane....I know you wants your gun pronz but, geeez you guys are brutal :p

After feeding a .300 for a while, i prefer something with a little less apatite. The recoil isnt really that bad, I usually go thru a box a sitting, with no ill affects. Only time i had an issue i shot up about 70rnds to clear out old ammo, and get cassings.

Which ever side of the fence you land on the deed is done. Congratulations Citadel on your fine purchase. Here's a pic I snapped of some of the ammo my pops went through last summer with his pair of .300 Win. Mags. I'd also recommend skipping the SuperFormance. By the by he's 64 and under 200 lbs. Sure they're both ported but he survived a 150 round session of side-by-side plus a few dozen through my (non-ported) 30-06s.

Congratulations! I've been trying to decide between a Cooper and Sako 85 classic for a while. I've got a few months to decide still. Definitely need to see some pics when you get home tho! Looking forward to em. Again, congrats on the nice rifle.

A 300 WM isn't that bad to shoot off the bench. Of course the degree of bad depends on lots of things like stock shape, fit and whether or not you've got a decent recoil pad on it.
