With the exception of the BAR, and bi-pod, tri-pod, or pedestal mounted MG's, it ain't all its cracked up to be in the movies if you want to hit at longer ranges.

Yep, grew up around them. My father was an active participant in the MG community for many years and got me into it. We still have a few, but the cost and lack of availability of surplus ammo has put a dent in the amount of shooting we do, especially with the heavy stuff. The subguns still see quite a bit of range time though, just because we can reload easier for them.

I always wanted to try out the .50 Browning but never got a chance.

In all three cases I got to fire them FA in Basic/AIT and then never again. I was in a mortar squad so we didn’t have a M249 or M60. We had enough stuff to lug around as it was.

For personal use it would be fun to have one in 22lr but that’s it. Anything else and I couldn’t afford to shoot it anyway.

I have rented submachine guns at The Gun Store in Las Vegas, NV and Scottsdale Gun Club in Scottsdale, AZ. My favorite of the ones I've tried is the H&K MP5. It is easy to control in full auto and has rifle-like accuracy in semi. Others were a compensated Thompson (my second favorite), suppressed Cobray, Uzi and Colt M635. I also shot a M16 but don't remember which variant. Although I had a blast doing it, it was a short-lived experience - not only does a magazine, when fired continuously, empty in 2-3 seconds tops, the ammo bill is a killer. :D Mostly, I tried to control it with short bursts of 3-5 rounds. The staff at both ranges supervised me very closely, ready to physically restrain me if I lost control. When I asked why, they pointed to the bullet holes in the ceiling almost directly above the firing position. :uhoh:

An at-180 .22 LR 180 round magazine the department was looking for guns in case of trouble on the compound. We ran 1100 inmates with 6 deputy's on duty. If you were ever at camp shoemaker WWII or camp parks KOREA you will know the place Any way it reduced a concrete building block to dust to powder in 5 seconds. As it had too many jams the dept did not buy.

Only one, the M14 I own. It's a lot of fun, and really starts to desnsitize a person to recoil after awhile. When you try to keep a sight picture through a 20 round magazine of .308, firing in semi seems easy :evil: . I can keep a full magazine fired in a 20 round burst on a man sized target out to 200 from the prone position with a bipod, haven't shot it further than that yet. From Standing I'm doing good if I can keep a 3 round burst on target at 25 yards :)

a M14, M16, AR 15, AK47 and Mac-10. Oh, let me not forget an Uzi. I enjoy shooting the M14 and AR15 most.

As the other military members have stated, I've fired everything the US Army currently fields, and I've been in long enough to have seen the transition from the M60 to the M240B. That said, leave it up the the military to take all the fun out of full-auto. I had a lot more fun firing the MP-5/.40 and Thompson M1A1 up in Dover-Foxcroft.

Various full autos at the local police range. I was not really impressed. The only one that seemed practical was an antique Thompson gun only because it was heavy enough that you could actually hold it on target. I also shot a pistol grip 870 with a 12 inch barrel. It was totaly impractical and any good handgun would out preform it. I have never fired a belt fed machine gun but as I understand it, they are heavy enough to control. The police department does not have anything like that.

The M14 was especially hard to control in full-auto, the MP5 was the most fun, and at 10 yards one can dump an entire mag into the A zone in about 2 seconds.

I have a friend who does WWII reenactments, so MP38, MP40, MG34(Barrels of fun, pun intended), Czech ZB26, M3 Grease Gun, Thompson both M1927 type and M1 military type, MAC-10s in 9mm and .45, MP-5s both supressed and unsupressed with fixed and retractable stocks, various M16s both A1 and M4 types.

Out of all of those the only one that really would have an advantage over a semiauto version would be the MG34, and that would be only if having to repel human wave type attacks. Fun to shoot, but at the end of the day they are very expensive toys that turn money into noise very quickly. I shot most of the above firearms on the same day, and between six people shooting we spent about 3000 dollars on ammo.

Have fired two Thompson variations, an S&W M76, an M3 "Greasegun", a 9mm Ingram, and an American-180.

All fun, none mine, and none recently.

Funny story . . . buddy of mine had two Thompsons. We met at a local (private) range to shoot them, and another guy was there with his girlfriend . . . and a Thompson. He was almost apologetic and asked us as fellow range members if we'd be OK with his shooting a full auto. (he didn't know what we had with us.) We allowed as, for a fellow range member, we'd tolerate it. :evil:

He then explained to his girlfriend that full autos were rare, and he wanted to be sure we were OK with it.

He fired a few bursts, and as he was swapping mags . . . we cut loose with "ours."

The look his girlfriend gave him was priceless . . . "What do you mean they're rare? EVERYONE ON THE RANGE HAS ONE!!!" :neener:

My brother and I rented an Uzi and a Thompson (I don't know the model) at The Survival Store in 'Vegas about 25 years ago. The Thompson was easier to control and, although this shouldn't have mattered (but it did), it sounded great! Maybe down the line I'll look in to a 10/22 Gatling gun kit (two 10/22s with a hand crank).

The full auto I would like to own is either the MP5/UZI/Swedish "K". But as a realist, I could only afford to feed one in 22 Long rifle. I could do that. IIRC the AT 180 with the Lewis gun like round pancake magazine would be nice.

Personally I have no need for a full auto. I would not fight with it in auto if I did have one. But I sure would like one to play with.

The only full autos I have fired are the M2 Browning .50 cal. in aircraft mounted pods in air-to-air gunnery on the T-2 aircraft, and the 20mm Hughes MK IV gun pod, in air-to-air and air-to-ground, mounted on the centerline of the F-4. The MK IV has a 4,000 rpm rate of fire and is almost like shooting a shotgun from an aircraft.

Over rated? Yes and no. As for how much fun they are, NOPE, they're really that much fun. As for effectiveness, yep, in all honesty (in a 5.56 rifle) I'd take a semi if it was time to put in some real work (maybe that's just me)

I have shot the Glock 18 a few times and no matter how tightly you clamp down, that thing is going to muzzle climb like crazy.

Yep, buddy has a Cobray M11 with silencer. I was less than impressed. Had to use the screw on forward grip to keep the muzzle down. No way to do that with that little cheesy strap, well, unless you're Steven Seagal in "Under Siege". :rolleyes: Hell, I couldn't afford the ammo. He got it for an investment, though, about 20 years ago and, I gotta admit, he has done better than the stock market. He gave 600 for gun and suppressor, 400 for the tax stamps. They don't sell class 3 stuff built after 1986. This has greatly lessened supply since he got his, and we all know how supply and demand works. :D

Oh, he didn't want the suppressor, but the shop wouldn't sell the gun without it.

I've only fired a rental Thompson M1A1. Very fun. Ammo disappears quickly. Learned after the first magazine not to use the sights and just look over the barrel like a shotgun when holding the trigger back. I never tried using it past 25 yards so I have no longer range experience with it.

yes, found this to be true with the M11/9 equipped with a Lage slowfire upper. however, when shooting an M16 compared to an AR15, i (personally) think it would be much easier to neutralize multipe targets with the latter than the first YMMV

Anyone in the Atlanta area that wants to shoot a SMG, give Stadards Gun Room (in Douglasville) a call. They have some SMG shoots coming up where they'll rent different SMG's (BYO if ya got it). I think you have to qualify with one under pretty close supervision before they cut you loose with it on the range (they rightfully want to know you're not stupid with it :)).

I've fired pretty much the full current army inventory and several rentals at a range. It's fun, but rental fees can be silly, you buy your own ammo, and you load your own mags. It's fun the first few times I suppose.

I really like the MP-5 for controllability and ease of use.

I really don't see a lot of use for full-auto fire in a service rifle. Mostly for suppression fire. I'm much more interested in teaching mmm soldiers to make hits count than how to hose things. That's what the light, medium, and heavy MGs are for.

Fired a Ma Deuce off the deck of the USS Sacramento at floating 55 gal drums in about 1995. It was awesome, and they let me keep the brass/links, still got them. LC 85/87 build. While I was there, the EOD guys let me blow up some 4x4s (timbers, not trucks)with det cord as well. That was pretty neat too.

My first was an M16A1 while in the Pickle Suit. Next was the M3 Grease Gun as I was in Armor. Varias caliber 50 Brownings and the sad excuse for a caliber .50 machinegun, the M85. Also on the M60A1 was a caliber .30 M73 coaxial mounted weapon which was about as reliable as the M3 Grease Gun. Then there was an MP5, a Thompson and a British Sten third variation.

Worked at a class three dealer. Shot a bounch including a GE mini gun. My adding reversal dinner was at a gun club and we brought an MP5 with us. Everyone in the wedding party got to shoot it. Watching some of the girlfriends and wives that didn't like guns giggle after shooting it was priceless.

M4 Carbine--the one I shot, jammed
AK47----This is truely the worlds greatest submachine gun because using Chinese or Russian ammo, you can barely hit anything outside of 150, maybe 200 yards.

H&K MP5--love it
WALTHER MPK--like it
UZI--prefer MP5
M-10 INGRAM--fun if you have the supressor attached, no so good without it
STEN GUN--it worked, but I think that is rattled more than a YUGO
AR15 9m.m.--it was actually a semi-auto carbine, but started doubling
STERLING--Nice, but I prefer the MP5

The Micro Uzi was interesting, never shot anything that short with a stock before. REALLY high rate of fire, though. Not that I'm complaining!

The AUG was cool, for the two stage trigger. Pull a little for one shot, pull harder for automatic fire. Handier than flipping a selector.

Overall, I could see some advantages, especially at close range. But I couldn't afford to feed anything bigger than a 9mm subgun anyway!

Evidence of a mispent youth and having the right friends In the German Army, border patrol, Police. Most were fired during my time in Europe as a MP. Favorites were Ma Duce and the Bren gun. Least favorite was a toss up between the M14 and the FAL I found both hard to handle efficiently. The MP5 SD was the best of the sub guns followed closely suprisingly by the Lancaster. Hated the MAT49 French designers seem to forget ergonomics and go for gimics like a folding mag well.
