FFL transfer fee?KA to ME

My son just got out of the Army, and moved to NY from KA.
His wife is still in Kansas, but will be moving to New York at the end of the month.
HE doesn't have his New York FOID yet, so he left his S&W 1917 with her in KA.
We want to ship it to me in Maine until he's got his FOID, so I called the gun shop my wife and I go to, and was told the transfer fee would be $50.
This seems high to me, but do we have any other options? I haven't called Cabellas or KTP yet to get their prices, but this just seems like a lot of money for a simple service.
Any thoughts?

That price is high for my area, but it might be cheap for yours. It all depends on what each dealer has decided to charge. If nobody around you is charging a great deal less than that, then that's what you are stuck with.
How long does it take to acquire the FOID card? The scenario you've described will require TWO interstate transfers for each gun.

My observation from around here is the FFLs who charge $50 and up really don't want to do the paperwork so they price it high. In WA, it's not just a form 4473 and a call to the NICS, for handguns it's filling out the state pistol transfer form, mailing it to at least two or three different places, and if the buyer has no carry permit, hanging onto the gun for up to 5 days waiting for the local PD to say yes or no.
The cheapest I've seen here is $20, the FFL I use charges $35 and I pay him just because $15 doesn't buy much gasoline these days, he is 5 minutes from my house.

Try using the FFL finder on gunbroker. It lists the FFL transfer fees for shops close to your location.

Be sure to contact any FFL you find on these lists, I have found that in some cases they have either raised their fee or decided to no longer do transfers. It happens more often than a person might believe.
