Purchase the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook and you will find a plethora of load data for the .223.

I was going to try and help, but Lyman's 49th only has data for 55gr lead bullets #225646 and #225415. What brand are your 50gr bullets? If you know that, you can probably get loading data from the manufacturer.

If your/the rifle is an auto, no load will function the action with them, save if you paper-patch them.
Top velocity will be around 22-2400fps. I'd suspect Alliant 2400 would work well. Work up.. I'd shoot for around 1800fps and then perhaps work up. If your friend made them, perhaps he has some load suggestions
I'd suggest going to castboolits.com.

Pointy lead bullets seldom do real well at high (for lead) velocity.
I would check around for loads with pistol powders in the 1000-1500 fps range and just treat it like a .22 WRM.
Caution: Light loads will set back case shoulders and give excess headspace, set aside some cast bullet brass and don't use it for jacketed.

Most cast rifle bullets are pointy. A very many are very pointy. Don't know what you're talking about regarding shoulder setback with cast loads.

You can always use the old Lyman 44. Go to page 28.
