I picked up a really nasty Mosin Nagant. I know almost nothing about these guns but over the past week I have studied and I am re-customizing my own version and calling it IVAN.

This is the bubbatized version as it was when I got it ...

This gun had no less than 4 coats of spray paint and some kind of filler like Bondo or epoxy all over it. If you look closely you can actually see the custom welded replacement BOLT is actually a BOLT.

I hunt and I like the camo thing but this was a tragedy...So the camo must GO.
I bead blasted all the paint and filler off of it. Then my son made me a new proper bolt handle and welded it on for me. I am kinda particular, but I really abhorr the feel of synthetic stocks. so I gave this one a bit of texture and feel of a bedliner type coating..
The barrel was very eroded on the last couple of inches. There was almost nor rifling left at all. So it got a re-size. I added my version of a target crown.
By the date on top of the chamber this is a WWII veteran of 1943. It is VERY roughly machined. Lots of tooling marks. The barrel also changes diameters several times in fairly noticable steps. It appears to have had several seperate turning steps that were not matched.
Overall I like the new look. The magazine is out getting sandblasted today.

ummm..... Nice bolt handle? Are you going to get a round ball and weld it onto the end of the bolt handle? Or are you going to make a spoon style bolt handle? Or are you going to leave it like that?

Are you going to shorten the mag to make it flush?

Is that a replacement barrel or original?

Sorry for all of the questions, I want to do one of these some day, whenever I get around to it.......

Not too sure what I will do with the bolt handle ... I may just leave it till after I get to shoot it a bit.
The barrel is ... as far as I know the original. Just a bit shorter now (20")
I never thought I would like an old Mosin. BUT my total cost out of pocket is $125. I picked up a box of ammo at Cabelas $16. The rest is just time and stuff I had laying around. There is a gun show here tomorrow I am thinking of looking for more goodies. I would buy an another old beater and do it again. These guns are simple and cheap.

If I ever get around to doing one, I will probably completely overkill it.... mill my own barrel for sub minute groups, drill/tap for a scope, lap the locking lugs, bed the action and barrel, all in the stock that it came in, so I can have a varmint gun that looks like the original....

Sound good?:scrutiny: Maybe way too expensive.....Way too overkill...

There are a bunch of purists that absoloutley hate seeing any Mosins getting altered in any way.
I see their point... its a piece of history. and you wouldnt chop up a vintage M-14.
But they aren't available for $80.~
Mine was already butchered i just plan to make it a bit easier on the eyes.
I plan on shooting it A LOT

I'm not a purist, at least concerning Mosins. But I would hate to see an M14 chopped up, but then again, an m14 is already capable of being a very accurate gun. And, like you said, they don't cost $80.00.

If I get one, it will be a beat up rifle that I bought for the action.

If you search the www you can find places that specialize in parts for the Mosin. Some have new un-issued parts. You might be able to find a barreled action and save the beaters for someone else.

I think I would shorten the bolt handle if for no other reason then it might snap off under recoil with all that leverage working on it. That thing is gonna twang like a tuning fork every shot.

You may be right RC
I think I may go shoot tomorrow, and I just finished coating everything in dark earth.
If it seems to be in the way it will be adjusted without prejudice

Well... what you see is fairly close to the final product.
I may swap out the scope, I used what was available. I may shorten the bolt a wee bit later on also.
I didn't put a ton of work into it. I did grind off the rear sight boss and smoothing the barrel out took a bit of elbow grease. Now ... Gotta go shootin!

I know it may be hard to tell ..the color on the barrel and reciever is Dark Earth. Real close to what I usta use on cars called red oxide primer? this has less red in it though.
My total out of pocket on the rifle by itself is just the $125 I paid in the beginning. I had all the products used on it "On Hand"
I did use a LOT of sand paper!

Took IVAN to the range this evening for a bit. (100yd)
Started to just do a sight in on it as it hadn't been zero'd. If you look at the pic it was grouping reasonably well but slightly low(see the cover-up pasters). I ran out of the Privi ammo and switched to surplus light ball? It started out shooting real high? Finally after fiddling with it a bit it started to come in a bit better. I even put 2 on top of each other.
Anyway a few observations....The scope I have on it is absolute JUNK. I am surprised it shot as well as it did. with the heat inversion coming off the barrel all I could make out was orange blobs. I noticed that the spent ammo had a ding on the shoulder of the case.
This may mean I migt have to re-barrel? anyhow overall I am pretty pleased

Kinda funny
There were a couple of guys left at the range when we were there. they were about 3 benches down.
I had shot IVAN a few times and was letting it cool off. The guy closest to us asked me "What kinda cannon you shooting down there?" Is that a 7 Mag?
He came down to have a look at it. When I told him I had only spent $125 dollars on it he couldn't believe it. He had never heard of a Mosin Nagant.
The muzzle blast was not bad from my perspective.Pretty much like my 30/06T.H.U.D. Must have been pretty noticable to the others though! Nice muzzle flash!

If you scroll down to the Mosin section, you will see some target barrels, originally made for LMGs. Apparently they shoot better than 1 MOA sometimes. If they get some more in, you could probably get one of those and inlet your stock for that size barrel.

Is that scope a Bushnell?

Those barrels are long gone.
They still come up on ebay & gunbroker but sell for triple the price tgi & classic sold them for.
I have one of the uk-59 barrels, a maxim barrel and a finned madsen barrel on mosin projects.

I would love to have one of those LMG barrels. I could also just get a McMillan?
That scope is a Bushnell .... It is a BAD ChiCom imitation of a 3~9X32. I do have a scope that came on a package Stevens. I think it is Bushnell 3~9X50?
I think 2 sticks taped to the barrel would be better than what is on there now.
I am looking at a nice SWFA scope for it.--- Optics is spensive!

A ChiCom Bushnell? If you want you could just get a ChiCom BSA and be probably worse off :P

Blanco

NO... This Chi-Com Bushnell is the worst excuse for rifle optics I have ever had the opportunity to peep thru

Ever seen a cheap BSA? If not, go down to your local Wal-fart and ask to see any of the gamo air rifles that come with a 3x-9x scope. They are BSA, they are probably the cheapest that they make, and everything is completely invisible past about 4x, forget even seeing orange blobs:banghead:... Might as well close your eyes if you are shooting at squirrels, you have the same chance of seeing it through either.....

I had a scope that i really haden't considered. It still fits my budget of $1.298
I have a Savage package rifle that came with a Bushnell Banner 3~9X50. While it is still Chi Com it is a major improvement.
Gotta go shoot again!
