Being virgin to 1911s, mine comes with one 7 rd mag. Is it compatible with 8 rd mags? Can I order just about any brand and not worry about compatiblity?

Yes. They'll all physically fit.

They will work, but you get what you pay for. I would opt for some high quality mags, like Chip McCormick, Wilson, or some of the others.

I always like to share this blog post from the late Mr. Camp on the subject of 1911 magazines.

With all the different designs and makers, every 1911 and magazine is virtually a law unto itself as to which will function in which gun.

^^^^^^^ What he said! I went to Trip kits a long time ago and never looked back. As for the magazine I prefer Wilson.

I like the 7rd SA factory mags the best, 100% function in all my 1911s. The Tripp kits are awesome, with the strongest spring I've ever installed in a magazine.:D

I have about 18 factory magazines in the 7 rd capacity for my 1911's. Since my 1911's are springfield you get a coupon for a huge discount on magazine which comes to about $7 per mag. They have never failed me. Did get two 8 rd magazine from a very reputable manufacturer for my birthday from my brother and was surprised to have malfunctions with those two mags.

8rd Tripp, CMC, Wilson and Kimber Tac Pro all run for me. No reason to drop a round IMO.

I agree with coalman. If you stick with the better makes, you won't have any trouble. If I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be the CMC mags, which are also available in ten rounders. Check out cdnninvestments.com they usually have pretty good deals on mags and grips and stuff.

Yes. They'll all physically fit.

You outta be in politics. :D

Good to see you got er home, Ex. Sling some lead first and when you're ready for more magazines don't order more than one of any brand until you confirm it works in your pistol. I'd start with a 7-round Colt.

I use either the Metalform or Act-Mag/Novak magazines purchased from CDNN.

mag-specific from the "other thread":
1 - might be a cheap mag, might be some roughness on the inner edge of the feed lips, might be any number of things. Don't scrap the magazine, although it might become a "range only" mag after a while. Get a selection of replacements (Chip McCormick, Wilson, MetalForm ... to name a few) and see what runs best, then you can figure out what is a carry magazine and buy a whole bunch of them.

I don't use anything but Wilsons and they work. Guaranteed too.

my Kimber Gold Match(used) came with 2 chip McCormicks. they work ok for a while (3 years) then i started getting jams. Went with Wilson and i'm never going back, they weren't much more (on sale every other week at midway usa) and they are great!

I use Wilson's in my Kimbers. Bought some GI's once at a gun show for 3 bucks apiece. Used them and no trouble with them so far. Guess I've had them close to 30 years. Also have a Packmyar and it works good.
