This knife belonged to my grandfather, it's an old Case hunting knife. I tried to find information about it a while back, but I'm having trouble figuring out what exactly it is. If anyone has any information on the knife, age, rarity, collectibility, value, etc., I'd be very thankful. I just wanna know more about it.

It is similar to a 386 (225256)

Now if you have the numbers of it, one can better tell the actual handle, pattern number and type of steel, as Case uses a numbering system.

All About Pocket Knives is a great site.

Handle material here:

My guess is Stag which means the number 5 in the numbering system.

The CASE - XX - USA stamp was started in 1965.

It is a 523-5" and there should be a letter stamped on the reverse tang indicating when it was made.

An L would be chrome between 1965 - 1974.
Or it could also be a stainless 523-5-SSP made 1972-1988.

Value is not high, as it is a used knife.
In perfect unused condition, it might be a $100 knife.

If it were my grandfather's, sentimental value would trump book value hands down.

It is a nice knife, I would enjoy it and any memories it has with it.
