When is the right time to replace a trimmer or maybe replace parts? Mine is really old (40 years) and has a little wobble in the shaft but still trims pretty well and I'm not noticing any real inconsistency in trims.

I'll be, 40 years, you got your money's worth out of that one. I'd replace the cutter head and leave the trimmer alone, who knows you might get another 40 years out of it. (We should only live that long),

After 40 years I would defintely replace the cutter head. Consider spending an extra few bucks and get the carbide cutter head. You will never need to buy another in your lifetime. :)

My (battleship gray) Lyman Universal trimmer is of the same vintage and my shaft is a bit loose too but it still works fine so I couldn't care less. I did replace the cutter about 20 years ago; thought of getting the carbide cutter until I saw the price...it's not worth that much to me!

Appreciate the input and will get the cutter head replaced. It still cuts but I'll probably wonder why I did not do it 20 years ago after I use a new one. Now I'll have money for concentricity equip that I don't have.

I had mine for almost that long. I replaced my cutter head 4 times.. when it's time to replace mine again im doing the carbide cutter ,yes they cost more. but it works better then the reg, kind, you won't have to push so hard to trim. When they get dull. you push harder, then the edge of the cases get smashed,,That happens when my cutter needs replaced,,

I've had mine for over 35 years and replaced the cutting head last year. It still does an excellent job after all these years.
